Hello everyone, today Fenway had his third chemotherapy appointment, and he already seems "off".  I am very concerned.   He keeps licking his lips, and he has burped quite a few times (not normal behavior) .  Also, now he is drinking and drinking, and drinking.  He just went outside to pee, and he peed , and peed, and peed.
Has anyone had this problem?  And should I call the vet again?  I already spoke to the nurse on duty, and she told me to offer him a bit of food, and some water.

This just isn't enough information for me.    Can anyone offer me advice, or wisdom?

Is this normal ? He has NOT reacted like this before.  Usually he is pretty normal until 6-7 days after his treatments.

What would you do?

The licking his lips and burping definitely sounds like nausea.  Personally, I would call the vet and specifically ask for something for nausea.

In our particular experience, Zeus did not follow any of the 'typicals' for chemo.  Our vet and all the online info said side effects would appear 5-7 days after treatment, but Zeus threw up the very same night of his first treatment.  For subsequent treatments, the vet was proactive and gave a simultaneous shot of Cerenia (sp?) and we never had that problem again.  After each treatment his lethargy showed up within a day or two.  Each dog is different, and although the stats say a week for symptoms, not every dog follows that timeline.  Keep in mind, too, that chemo is cumulative so each treatment hits them a bit harder.

Hope Fenway feels better soon!

Lisa

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Oh Fenway, you are making us worry about you, which is new to us because so far you've really done so fantastically! The only Forum topic I could find that matched "excessive thirst" and "chemotherapy" is this discussion. I wish I could be more help.

Goldenmama I'm sorry we missed you in the chat earlier. We'll be out most of the weekend but I'll try to check in tomorrow to see how he's doing. In the meantime, I would call your vet right away, because it sounds to me like your instincts are telling you this is not right. Go with your gut feeling I always say. Even if it's nothing at least by letting your vet know what's going on and possibly take him in for a quick check, you can alleviate at least some of your worries.

Keep us posted OK?
