Minnie has been home for just over 24 hours now, she's doing really well, but I think this pain patch is making her very anxious. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts, so we weren't too worried, we just realize it's the medicine. She's getting it removed tomorrow, so if we can manage one more day of lots of whining, I think we'll be in the clear!

She does have blood in her urine though, which is concerning. We just dropped off a urine sample at the vet clinic, and we should hear back soon whether or not they want to see her. Has any one else heard of this as a side effect? Minnie had her amputation 2 days ago, and it on antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and has a pain patch too.

I feel so bad for her, pacing around and whining. It seems like there isn't anything I can do do comfort her. She will calm down for a few minutes, but then start whining like crazy again.

Haven't heard about the blood in the urine.  I'm glad your vet is on top of it.  The anxiety though sounds familiar!  Emily could not take the tramadol without having a lot of anxiety!  We also removed the fentanyl patch a day earllier (with the dr's approval) because Emily was high strung and it too was causing anxiety. Good luck with the recovery.  I wil be praying for Minnie.  Keep us informed.

Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.

Yes - Cherry did have blood in her urine.  One of the advantages of keeping a detailed journal of Cherry's TriPawd Journey is the ability to really check accurately what happened.  Cherry's blood appeared just before Christmas, which was seven weeks after her surgery.  Like you, I was very concerned and dropped off a uring sample.  When you get the results, you will have a better idea what you are dealing with.  For Cherry, it was the kidney dumping blood into the urine, probably triggered by all the chemicals, no signs of bacteria in the urine, and stopped on its own after a week.  You will need to wait until the vet gets back the culture to see if anything is going on.

Both Emily and Cherry had a lot of trouble with Tramadol.  We removed that medication very early (with the vets reluctant agreement).  I will agree that the chemicals/medications all have positive effects, but for may of our companions, they also have negative effects as well.  The key is to balance.  You will probably see improvement between now and when the patch is removed due to the reduced chemicals in the patch with time, but removal will probably show the most.  In time, when all the chemicals have left Minnie's body, you should see her calm down and really start the road to recovery.

Yep, sure sounds like it's the pain patch, but smart move to take a urine sample to the vet (isn't that fun trying to get one?!). We don't have any experience with that personally (thank you Cherry, for sharing your story!). But we send our healing wishes. Keep us posted OK?

Minnie's Turkey Day recuperation reminds my pawrents of the Thanksgiving they spent with me seeing pink elephants too. It's not easy, but it'll make your pack stronger. Hang in there.

Thank you Emily, Cherry and Gerry and pawrents for your answers and encouragement!

MInnie has a UTI, which should clear up with the antibiotics she's on. We're looking forward to getting the patch off, and to having the vet tech's take a look at her stitches tomorrow. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be to get a urine sample from her, good girl that she is!
For our American tripawd pals, Happy Thanksgiving, we are in Whitehorse now, for Minnie's surgery and a bit of healing time, but we actually live in Dawson City, Yukon, about 550km's north of Whitehorse. If any of you are travelling to Alaska this summer, stop in, it's a fun town.

We'll keep you posted on Minnie's healing process for sure, this website has been so helpful, I'm glad I found it.

It's good to hear Minnie has something so easily treated.  She'll be back to her spunky self in no time.  Pain meds can be a real challenge for our fury friends, but they are so necessary.

You live in a beautiful place.  We made the trp to Alaska twice in a motorhome and thouroughly enjoyed that area.  Loved BC, too.
