I also have two dogs. While every dog is different, I found that mine were very careful of each other, first when the female had cruciate repair over the summer and now as the male went through amputation and is going through chemo. They could clearly each tell when the other was hurting or weak. You might have fewer issues than you think. And, until the staples come out, Eider should only be out on short leashed potty breaks. He will sleep a lot so the bionic tail probably won't be much of a problem. In terms of the boxer shorts, the surgeon will probably send Eider home with a come of shame and strict instructions to wear it until the staples come out. The cone was a challenge for some of our dogs. Otis is a front leg amp, so we wore a TShirt (with excess material gathered in a hair tie) instead of the cone. Worked perfectly to keep him away from the incision. I suspect the boxer shorts are the equivalent for the rear leggers.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
Cassie & Max pretty much left Murphy alone, too. They were around him a lot, but didn't really mess with him much, so we didn't have any problems. I think the boxer shorts thing is you put them on with the fly up, where Eider's tail goes. (Murphy is a front leg, so we used t-shirts). It sounds like you have a great plan in place so far!

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

You might want to consider a log book so you can keep track of meds, food, water, and business for the first 2 weeks. It is especially helpful if more than one of you will be giving meds. I also found it helpful to know when (ok, in my opinion) Otis needed to go outside and when it could be optional if he didn't want to get up.

Really glad to hear the surgery went well! He's set, you're set, things will be fine. Breathe!

Awww Elgin.... nice walk down memory lane....such a sweetie
You've done an excellent job of preparing as best anyone can prepare! When you go to see Elder, don't even bother looking at that ole incision, he sure isn't! Elder just wants you to kiss his muzzle and look into his eyes and tell him what a good boy he is!
Now is the time for you to try and rest so you can be a strong and confident pack leader when you go see Elder. It is exhausting and stressful for us humans to get to this point in the journey. Rest does wonders for the ability to stay positive. A few chocolate candy bars help too!
Can't wait to see pictures of Elder in his boxer shorts!
Looking forward to celebrating lots of victories with you and Elder!
Hugs!

LS...Surgeons like to shave a lot of fur so don't let that shock you.
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
After Murphy's amp, and again after his THR, we kept him confined in a double sized exercise pen that was set up in the living room. He was not motivated to break out of it (probably due to the meds) when we first started him in it, so it wasn't a problem keeping him in it for his lengthy recuperation from the THR. I made a cushion from a doubled queen size egg crate mattress pad and covered it with a soft fabric. He seemed to treat it as if it was just a larger crate without a top. If I remember correctly we used two of the 30" high ones hooked together.
We didn't have the lethal tail problem, since Murphy was the one with the Turbotail! Gus pretty much just stayed out of his way during the recovery period.
Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork
Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!
UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
A blog would be awesome!
And when I read that I remembered the only other hemi I could think of- Tate the Flat Coat Retreiver. Tate Crossed the Bridge back in 2011 but lived large after his amp. The blog seems a bit messed up or it could be the formatting- you have to scroll to the bottom to go back or forward.
Here is how you start a blog. There is a link with a star in front that says "Start your free blog now...". There are instructions that walk you through the process and some help videos as well.
I'm looking forward to more pictures of Eider and to follow his adventures!
