My dog, Barkley, a 13 year old beagle was diagnosed with cancer and had his left rear  leg amputated back in December.  Upon biopsy, they determined is was a grade 3 Fibrosarcoma.  So, we started chemo and he just received his second round yesterday.  He has recovered wonderfully from the surgery; gets around the house well, jumps off of couches, and enjoys walks once again.  He is also tolerating the chemo really well and has not had any side effects.  Yay! big-grin  The one thing, however, is that after the MRI they put him on codeine, which caused him to urinate in his sleep.  We backed off of that, and they used different pain meds after the surgery.  Ever since he has been drinking way more water than usual, and thus needing to potty more often and having accidents in the house.  Everything looks good after the urinalysis and no abnormalities found from blood tests.  Their thoughts were that it could be a sign of pain (arthritis or coping from only having 3 legs now) or anxiety from everything he has been through.  I don't really think it is due to pain, because before the MRI when he was in pain, he never did this.  I guess it could be anxiety, but I definitely don't want to put him on anxiety medication right now.  Has anyone else had this happen or have thoughts on what could be happening?

What meds did they put him on? I know that prednisone causes them to drink copious amounts of water (and therefore need numerous potty breaks). The thing that needs to be remembered with pred is that it cannot be stopped cold turkey. It has to be discontinued slowly over a period of time. It also needs to have a washout period before starting other anti-inflammatories. This is something that you shoukd definitely discuss with your vet before doing any adjusting on your own.

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Thanks!  He's actually has been off the pain meds, and all meds, for quite some time.  No prednisone, though.  I definitely thought it was all of the pain meds and antibiotics he had been on, but it just hasn't gotten better.  They decided to put him on an anti-inflammatory to see if that help. It makes sense that now that he only has 3 legs, arthritis might be kicking in more.  Fingers crossed the anti-inflammatory works!

BARKLEY!!! ,SO GOOD TO HEAR MR. BARKSTER IS DOING SO WELL!! 🙂 🙂

He is an amazing fella', especially for being a very...er..."mature" pup! 🙂

Don't have any insight into the urinary/water drinking issues. It started BEFORE the chemo, right? I know that NITRO had some incontinence issues after starting chemo.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions. It's a good sign that he s feeling so good and is completely happy!

Would love to see a videomof him enjoying his walks! HINT! A 13 yr young pup is always an inspiration around here! That was a great video you posted awhile back of Barkley walking shortly after surgery!

Keep on rockin' Mr Barkster!

Hugs!

We have had excessive drinking since during Chemo. But we are now 9 months post and still have it. Manni would just finish a complete bowl of water like he hadn't had any in days. It's like his brain forgets to tell him to stop. If you talk to him he'll look at you and stop. Then we also have what I call peeing accidents where he's in the yard and , like it surprises him too, he just stands in the middle of the lawn ( unlike on corners or bushes as would be boy-like) on all three and pees suddenly and really long. He seems surprised by that too and slightly shocked. We have not had accidents in the house though.

And while I have mentioned this time and again the vets have not found a cause.

So, you know, if there's any news on your front, I'd be really interested to know. 😊
