Drinking a lot of water? Or so it seems?

Shelby always used to drink more of her water at night (I think she figures that if I am home, she can drink and I'll take her out to potty so it's better than having to hold it all day) but maybe I am just more sensitive right now but it seems like she's drinking WAY more (and therefore panting to go out to pee). Could be that I am flavoring her dinner w/low sodium chicken stock to get her to eat it or could this be a weird side affect to her cancer? Odd that it just started but who knows. Nothing about this dog is normal.

I guess I should call her vet tomorrow. Her poops have been rather loose which concerns me but it could be the ground turkey burger I had to mix into her food (also probably high in sodium) to get her to eat it. So maybe that is all that it is and the food is just too rich for her.

She was a perfect angel up until about an hour ago and now she's gone full on bat crazy on me and it just concerns me since she won't chill. Thoughts?

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Hmmmmmm......dn't think it's anything to be concerned about. Cold be the sodium. The turkey could be causing the stoolmissue.

What's she dong as far as going "bat crazy"? Not sure I can co jure up that visual!

Hangn there and check with the vet in the am. Realky don't think it's serious.
Hugs to you and the bats!

You're right ... it's probably the sodium. She's always been a hearty drinker all at once vs over the day. I guess I am just hyper sensitive to anything else abnormal about her. She just seems to have to go out MORE at night unless she's just milking it to get more outside time? She is crafty.

LOL - bat crazy means basically just being a little nutty, needy, overall up in my business for no good reason. I get that I am at work all day but I really want to relax at home at night w/out having to pet her for hours on end (literally). I think she must be bored so it's fine balance between exercise and toys (the only toys she likes are ones w/food so I have to make sure she doesn't get chunky). She slept through the night fine (in her bathroom, of course).

Awwwwww, she's just missing her momma, tat's all! I thought maybe she was hanging off the chandelier (or, in this day and age...trying to climb through a recessed light and eat the bulb)!

Ahelby is your world (as if you didn't know that, huh?) and her whole day is consumed with waiting foryou to come home. Dogs can't read a book, or watch tv, or do anyother "hobby". All they can do is be by your side and watch and wait to see what you'll do next so they can do it too!

Have you tried playing "hide and seek" with her with treats? Let her see what you're doing...where you're "hidng" them and then encourage her to go find. Also, get one of those "Kong" toys that you put treats in.....I smear the inside with peanut vutter.....-and it will occupy her...guaranteed! For now...and this is just me...I wouldn't worry about excess weight, just her being happy. Of course be diligent...but a Kong toy with some treats to help with the boredom is more important fr ow.

Maybe n the drive home, you can play some soothing music to help destress. Take on the mindset of knowing that the first thirty minutes when you walk in will be "Shelby time"! Just jumpinto the moment of how excited she is to see you and what a gidpft that is! I think you'll make the switch to playtime with Shelby being relaxing for yo too! Make the bely rub times take you to a meditative-like state...each rub takes you into a deeper state of relaxtion.

All else fails...break out the wine!!!

I'm so glad she's doing so well! Keep it up SHELBYSTRONG!! Compared to all the problems she's had, beng needy and taking over the bathroom.....piece of cake!!

Hugs and love to you both!

I know ... I am her entire world and now that she is feeling better (I think/suspect) she is probably way more eager for me to get home and spend time w/her. She definitely has a mischievous look in her eyes when I leave for work - like 'trouble' or 'she's going to do something she shouldn't'. As a terrier, she's always been super curious and borderline "destructive" in my home (curtains, shoes, the trash). I figured we had out grown all that as she has aged but I am seeing some puppy likeness in her again.

And then she just stands and stares, like she can't figure out how to sit down or something. She is probably fine. I do have a kong for her - I'll get her some 'filling' for it. She was chomping at her bone earlier that used to be filled w/some cheesey mixture thing.

She acts super hungry and then thirsty and I read on PetMD and freak out that she's got all sorts of issues. When in fact, the soup is probably salty to her and the turkey is probably processed and giving her an upset/gassy belly. I do hear gurgling in her belly sometimes at night when we're on the floor.

And you're right - I was easing off the wine so I didn't become a lushy / chunky mama and that is what has been different the last couple of days! Maybe she's trying to tell me that I'm more mellow w/a glass of vino! Or we're going to have a full moon or something - I should be happy she's got so much spirit and personality - even if it seems to come back on suddenly. I still think they gave her a brain transplant at the vet - she's definitely changed in some ways... not good or bad, but different!

Thanks for always listening, Sally (and Happy Hannah) !!! love ya!

Ok, you cut back on the sodum for Shelby and add the vino back into your meal plans!

I'm guessing it's the sodium too. Call the vet just in case.

So psycho dog is apparently drinking the right amount of water, give or take, for her body weight. She should have about an ounce of water per pound per day and that's about what she has (maybe a smidge more). They also think that perhaps it is the sodium in her food and since her stool has been rather loose, that can also cause her to lose more liquid. And she's just a week off her last chemo so she might still have some of those issues.

And that she's a 'hungry hungry hippo' for no real reason, they encouraged me to add more pure pumpkin to her dinner (she LOVES that stuff but I thought it would cause diarrhea) and if I can get her to eat the no-salt green beans again, that will also add healthy bulk.

I am so glad they don't charge by the phone call. Shelby really only does drink at night and it was about a bowl - for a day - total so I guess there isn't a lot to be concerned about. They also don't think she will get fat but I still worry. :-) But I also worry that about me! LOL blush

An ounce of water per pound per day...that is great information, thank you! Glad that her intake is normal.

Yes, pumpkin and green beans are key to helping her feel full.

Good for you for calling your vet with questions. After all, you keep their lights on so call them anytime we always say!
