I am thrilled to say that Zeus had his sixth (and last) round of Carboplatin today.  Dr. R had slightly reduced the dose for treatments four and five since his WBCs seemed to be taking so long to come back up.  Even with the reduced dose he still had to wait four weeks between treatments before the WBCs recovered.  However, he did SO well with the reduced dose.  Huge increase in energy and the 'weakness' in his legs seemed to completely disappear. We are hopeful that he will do well after this last treatment.

We have an appointment on May 31st to have x-rays and begin MP treatment.  Although we are hopeful that Zeus will tolerate the MP well, we are prepared to stop if he does not.

Still so very grateful for all of you guys!!

Lisa

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Congratulations Zeus!  That is absolutely great news!  You are one awesome guy!  We'll be sending good thoughts your way throughout the month of May for good x-ray results and an easy time on the metronomic protocol!

Hooray for the final treatment! I hope there are some French fries in the near future for him to celebrate!

Will keep sending good thoughts for the upcoming xray!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Wooo hoo! It's so wonderful to hear about these milestones. Just when you think the treatment will never be done with, there you are! Congratulations Zeus.

I'm sure he will tolerate metronomics very well, few dogs have an issue with the low-dose chemo regimen.

I hope you're pawtying it up this weekend my friend. We're so hoppy you made it past this big hurdle!

Small world!  We are southerners by birth but we moved to PA about 4 years ago.  We lived in Lancaster, PA the first three years and then moved to Bellefonte (no one knows where Bellefonte is, so I just put State College in my profile!) about a year ago.  It really is a pretty area, but way too cold for our Carolina blood!  winker

Congratulations Zeus!!!!!!!!!!!!  No more chemo; how good it feels!  Keep up the good work, it's easy street from now on 🙂

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011

Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011.  Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs.  If love alone could have saved you…

Thanks again everyone.

I have to say that, if this had not already been his sixth and final treatment, we would have stopped anyway.  It definitely is cumulative and this one really knocked him on his butt.  His treatment was on Friday and he was panting alot and he was so weak that he could barely walk the rest of Friday and all day Saturday.  After lots of sleeping and rest (and Mom checking his gums 2,000 times to make sure they were still pink!) he finally turned the corner on Sunday.  Today he is back to his normal, bouncy self!  Treatments two and three caused him to be lethargic and a little unstable with his walking.  Once they reduced the dose for treatments four and five, we noticed that he was tired and lethargic for a day, but again, nothing like this!

Knowing that he has that pesky met (we pray it is still just one!), we will still probably try the MP but will stop immediately if he shows any adverse effects.  Fingers crossed....

Lisa, I missed this the other day (sick kid and Dakota getting his tooth knocked out!) but I wanted to say how relieved I know you must be and how delighted I am that Zeus is doing so well. He is really the poster boy for older gentlemen here. When someone with an older dog wonders if it's fair to "put their dog through" amputation, I always think of Zeus. He's showing us all how to live right here, right now.

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

We, monkeydogs are wise to the tripawd's ploy for treats and attention!  .............."Waaaa!  I'm sick...bring me a treat mommy." or "Waaaaa!  I'm missing a leg........bring me a treat mommy."

Can't fool the monkeydogs Moosey!!!  Now, don't  you feel bad for stressing out your mommy?  You should.

I always think of Zeus as a lipless Moose head!!!!!

Way to go Zeus!  We gods and warriors have to stick together.

I finished chemo today too - am having a celebration hamburger.  Mom doesn't cook so we will go to a restaurant called Fred's.  They have a picture of me there.  You should have a burger too.

Love,

Ajax
