I personally use Tramadol all of the time without many issues.  It is a very safe drug.  It seems to hit some dogs harder post-amp perhaps because of the trauma of surgery or maybe due to reactions with other drugs.  With chronic use there are very little problems in dogs.

Hi Cynthia,

Dakota seems to be about the same today. He's kind of staggering around like a drunken sailor, but then he did move a bit faster outside so he could bark at an imaginary phantom. One change I have noticed is he does not want to go out the dog door. He only wants me to let him out through the house. I guess that's not unexpected if his knee is painful.

No real effects from the Tramadol. He slept a good bit today, but he's 9. He sleeps a lot during the day.

Thanks for asking. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Shari

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Dakota's thoughtful and erudite blog is at http://shari.tr.....pawds.com/

Hi Dakota Dawg,

I agree with another post about maybe trying some acupuncture, massage or maybe laser therapy.  Laser therapy can really help with inflammation, pain, circulation and so much more.  Please ask your vet first though::)  Maybe after some rest hydrotherapy/swimming is a great option for exercise, less taxing on the joints, once again I'm not trying to play doctor just tossing some ideas out there.

It's wonderful their was no evidence of a cruciate tear, or arthritis that is awesome!

There was only two ways for me to get the tramdol down Naan's throat.

1.  Peanut Butter globbed all around the pill and then I would kinda stick to the roof of her mouth.  Usually worked everytime.

2.  Just open his mouth and shove it in!  (I know it sound awful, but sometimes it is the only thing that would work).

I am new to Tripawds so I am not sure how long ago Dakota's surgery was.  Did the doctors say anything about muscle weakness or muscle atrophy?  Maybe he just needs to regain more strength.

I hope he is feeling better soon, he is such a handsome boy.  My other dog is a Golden, they are the biggest lovessmiley

Hang in there and take care,

Lisa & Naan

PS- Dr. Narda Robinson at CSU does acupuncture, laser therapy and I think massage too.

If you don't own a dog, at least one, there is not necessarily anything wrong with you, but there may be something wrong with your life.

It's interesting because when my Mackenzie was on Tramadol before her surgery she had no problems with it. But after her surgery, she had a lot of problems.  It's good to hear that Dakota is doing ok being on it even after his surgery.  This must be so tough to constantly have to watch this.  I totally empathize.   Pill pockets was always a slam dunk when giving pills to Mackenzie.   She loved them... Sometimes the only thing she would eat - that and her little bisquit treats. There's lots of other great suggestions here too.

So we are sending you lots of golden healing thoughts and hope that Dakota feels better soon.

Kami, Angel Mackenzie and Kobe

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Naanypoo

Here's a tip for peanut butter so it's not messy!  Put the peanut butter on a plastic utensil's handle and scrape the back of their teeth!

It works everytime!

Just fixed it. Not sure what was wrong, be sure to select "Use old embed code" on YouTube and paste that in HTML mode. Videos seem to no longer have a yellow box in the post editor, but they do display after saving when embedded this way.
