Anyone have any advice on how to cover a rear leg amputee wound? I tried a t shirt (I know its mostly for front leg amputees but I was desperate!) didn't work! I tried boxer shorts, they didn't stay up!

Tucker really really hates the ecollar I have to put on him but if I don't put it on he licks the wound! I am afraid he is going to take out some stitches! With him just having the surgery Tuesday I know that's not a good idea! We go back to the vet Saturday to get the drain out but until then I am trying everything!

Last night was his first night home and it was terrible! He whined and cried and paced the floor all night! The only way I could get him to calm down was to put him in his crate (uncomfortable because of the huge Ecollar!) When I got up to check on him a few hours later he had somehow managed to take the collar off! I could tell he had been licking at the wound! If I could find something to cover the wound so I wouldn't have to keep the collar on I would feel so much better!

You could try wrapping an Ace bandage aorund the wound at night when you can't watch him. The first week is tough, especially at night, also be sure to time his pain medication so he gets it right before bed. We also had a week of sleeplessness, but I will tell you at 2 weeks 3 days post op that is behind us. Paris had a rough time with crying, being depressed and being restless. I think all of it is normal....whatever that is!

Have you thought about making a bed on the floor and letting him lay with you? Lots of soft fluffy blankets to lie on.

Good luck and hope you get some rest.

Our carter also had a rear leg amp and he really wanted to lick at it.  He hated the e-collar so my sister in law sent us a soft e-collar from the bonafido company (looked it up on google and it is at http://www.bonafido.com).  I just posted this to another string too.  He actually likes the soft one because it actually gives him a bit of a pillow when he lays down.  A cold compress (just a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a pillow case) helped calm him down.  You may want to try that while the swelling is still up.

Thanks Gineej, Paris and Cartersdads! We tried the first night to sleep in the floor with him but that didn't work because he just kept pacing and pacing until I put him in his crate but even then he hated that! Last night turned out a lot better! We talked to the vet yesterday and she changed his meds around a little bit and we got a little bit stronger meds for right before we went to bed. That worked out wonderful! We gave him the meds about 10pm and by 10:30 he was snoozing peacefully! I hated to give him a bunch of meds but I knew it couldn't be good for him to stay awake all night stressed out and pacing! He slept all night, no whining or pacing! He woke up at 7 this morning and ran (literally dragging me!) outside to potty and then back inside begging for food!

His wound is still swollen and irritating him with the itching of the drain (we get it taken out tomorrow!) so I am going to try the cold compress today to see how that works!

Thanks for all the advice!

There are also a couple options from JeffersPet quality discount pet products:

They make the ProCollar inflatable style protective e-collar and Comfy Cone flexible e-collar.
