orinoco our lurcher had his front right leg amputated in October 2015 due to osteosarcoma and went on injectible carboplatin chemo treatment. He's now had 8 doses and the oncologist is suggesting moving to an oral treatment we administer at home.

happily 6 months post amputation his scan showed no signs of any spread so we are wondering the best course of treatment for him.

One of my issues is that we are rubbish at giving him pills and he can find them whatever they are hidden in.

Our oncologist is unaware of continued use of carboplatin having any impact as its not generally done and there are side effects continuing with this treatment.

I'd be grateful for any thoughts or advice.

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR GOOD XRAYS!!! 🙂 HAPPY SIX MONTH AMPUTATION!! 🙂

Glad you hear your puo is doing so well!

Im certainly no vet, vut I don't think I've even seen where eight doses of Carbo were given. Ge erally we see, four, fove or six. So yeah, I would think yiur Onco is spot on about not continuing. When you jave time, would love to jear your Onco's theory on giving eight rou ds of chemo. We are always open to new possibilities!

What "pills" are being recommended? Metronomics perhaps?

As far as giving pills, we've all come up with some unique ways. Here's what worked for my Happy Hannh. Out of her sight, I would pick up the pill with tweezers, aki g sure my hands had NO scent whatsover. I qould get the stinkiest turkey liverwurst I could find. I woild form it into a ball (again, maki g sure my hands has never touched the pill) and ake a hole in the center. I I inserted the pill with tweezers, rolled the ball shut.. I made severla different balls, tossed them to her...gulp...gulp...gulp...down we t the one with the pill.

Others will chime in with some of their solutions. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Hugs to all!

We had understood that they would do 6 doses, in January he had his first scan which was clear and the oncologist said he'd go to seven and after the latest scan he had his eigth.

hes tolerated it really well, no sickness after the treatments just a bit tired for a day then back to normal.

Thanks for the tip on the pills, will give that a go!

First - happy 6 month ampuversary and supper wonderful congrats for clean xrays.

We didn't deal with OSA, my pug Maggie had mast cell cancer so we had a different chemo regimen.  Her chemo was 14 total doses over  6 months, I don't remember ever hearing of a pup having 8 carbo treatments.

Sally mentioned the metronomic protocol- many start that after lung mets are seen, but I think some have started after the traditional chemo.

As for pills- Here is a link from the Nutrition Blog with some ideas on giving pills, and Here is another Link on how to Pill your Pup.

My little pug Maggie was pretty good at finding pills in just about anything.  And as an added bonus once she found a pill in a certain type of food, say chicken, she wouldn't eat chicken again for weeks!

One thing that worked for me was slightly melted cheese.  I would cut a piece of cheddar cheese big enough to wrap the pill and some extra pieces.  I would microwave the cheese pieces for just a few seconds to get them melty, then wrap the pill in the warm (not hot!) cheese.  Because it was warm the cheese had a slightly oily feel and it would slide right down her throat.  Like Sally I would give her a piece or two of plain warm cheese and in fairly rapid succession I would slip in the cheese with the pill.

Mag did eventually catch on and boycotted cheese for a while, but it did get us most of the way through her chemo.

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.
