Hi Everyone,

Quick background - my 8 yr old Lab, K, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on Dec 23. She had stereotactic radiation to kill the tumors in her radius and ulna (front limb bones). Then, she started carboplatin treatments with the plan to do 6 rounds.

On March 16, she already had 5 small lung mets (none were visible in Dec). The oncologist said that it seemed that K's cancer was "very aggressive" because it's rare to find lung mets in the midst of carboplatin treatment. She suggested trying an alternative treatment. She gave us the choices of doxorubicin, metronomic chemotherapy , and palladia.

We chose to do a round of doxorubicin on that very day. K has tolerated it beautifully with almost no side effects. We'll do another chest xray on April 9. If the mets are not multiplying, we'll give K two more rounds of doxo.

My question for all of you - have any of you given metronomic chemo while a dog was in the midst of doxorubicin treatments? Our oncologist, an expert at Colorado State Vet School, says that they've never done this at their hospital before. They discussed it at a staff meeting, and the vets felt that the risks were "not too high" and that we had "very little to lose" in our fight against this aggressive case of osteo.

That makes me wonder if any of you have tried this combination? I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences.

In the meantime, we are living large, enjoying every single day that K is feeling spunky and happy. We just returned from 10 days in the red rock desert of utah with her. I tried to insert a photo but failed... so here's where I posted about it on my blog:  http://romp-rol.....gspot.com/

Thanks everyone,

KB

K, an 8 year old chocolate lab, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the radius and ulna on 12/23/11. She had stereotactic radiation to kill the bone tumors, and 3 rounds of carboplatin. On 3/16/12, lung mets were found. We tried several different kinds of chemotherapy to slow the lung mets but none worked. Finally, mets appeared at other sites, including her spine. She earned her angel wings on July 15, 2012. K changed my life, and I'll never forget her. Our/my journey is chronicled at romp-roll-rockies.blogspot.com.

Wow, what an adventurous life K has! We went to the San Rafael Swell last year and loved it.

I'm glad you asked this question about Metronomics and Doxorubicin. CSU has one of the world's leaders in studying metronomic chemotherapy for dogs, so you know you are in GREAT hands! In fact we have a Tripawd Talk Radio podcast with her:

Metronomic Chemotherapy Protocol News with Dr. Barbara Biller

Keep us posted. It's great to hear K is doing so well.

What a gorgeous girl!

We did carbo and MP (including trying palladia) but never did the doxo. Some folks have had good results with Palladia and lung mets - but we weren't that lucky. We had to stop after 3 months due to GI issues.

Keep us posted on how it goes! Glad she is getting out and loving life.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
