Well, sadly there are several others in a similar boat and I thought I'd ask them and the experienced folks for advice.

Tilghman we thought had been getting progressively better- we're 2 weeks post amp! And 10 days post Chemo.  But the past couple of days have not been great.

* Lost interest in food (HIGHLY unusual). Even with hot dogs, chicken broth, etc. not interested.

* Today, Tilghman peed all over himself and the couch today, which is so not like him. (Marking, yes, but losing control, no). ;)

* Still doesn't want to stand up- we litterally have to pick him up to get him to stand up to take him outside

* Red ulcers inside his mouth (like the cancer sores I get in my mouth)

We went on Gab. and Rimadyl for shrieks of pain, but have stopped given concern that Rimadyl has upset his tummy.  Not sure if this is him not tolerating chemo well (we're 10 days post chemo) or still recovery from the surgery. Or both.

How have folks liked the K9 Immunity ?  Anyone use other alternative methods?

I think some of it is Tilghman is still getting used to being a Tripawd.  I can't asnwer about the peeing all over himself.  Sassy hasn't done that.  The chemo has definately changed her appetite especially a few days after the chemo.  She hasn't had any ulcers either.  I would definately ask your Oncologist or vet about the ulcers.

Thanks, Michelle! The oncologist says that she hadn't heard of mouth sores before and that perhaps he is naseaus due to chemo so we're picking up anti-nasea meds tomorrow.  It's just weird that it's so many days after chemo...

Poor Tilghman. That's not much fun.  We were told that side effects due to chemo could happen up to 10 days after chemo (even 14 days if I remember correctly).  Hopefully the anti-nausea meds will calm things down.  The peeing himself is something I never saw BUT in my older dog I have seen her wet herself in her bed when she has had tummy upsets so maybe it's related?

I don't know about the mouth sores.  Maybe a sign of the immune system being suppressed.

I'd definitely be discussing with your oncologist.

Hope he feels better soon.

Oooh, scary.  I don't know.  We were led to believe that the window for max side effects were days 3-5, but up to day 10 is possible.  Peeing himself, mouth sores, and resistance to movement don't strike me as side effects, unless that's how he expresses nausea.  At 2 weeks post-op, Jackson was off all pain meds.  I hope the anti-nausea meds help a lot and solve all problems!  You've got quite a boy on your hands.  Keep us updated!

I've not done K9 immunity , but so many have.  Jerry was on it (enrolled in its clinical trial, no less!) and they were really, really happy with it.  I think K9 Immunity is largely those magic mushrooms.  There are lots of mushroom products and there are nutrition blogs about the 'shrooms.  Do some reading.  We're about to begin Power Mushrooms.  He's been on Only Natural Pet's Immune Strengthener (check it out), but there are things in there with the mushrooms.  I want J on maximum mushrooms!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

It is probably a combo of the surgery and the chemo.  I know that some oncologists like to do the chemo ASAP or even prior to amputation.  I waited until Tazzie was 3 weeks post-op to give her the first chemo dose because she was so big and even though she recovered well I just wanted her to be stronger prior to chemo.

Has your dog had a CBC yet?  Chemo can wipe out both platelets and white cells and some dogs area their lowest 7-10 days after the chemo injection.

I think that Power Mushrooms or K9 Immunity are a great idea but I would check with your vet first.

Pam
