CHEMOTHERAPY AND TEMPERATURE SPIKE!!!!

Since many on this site HAVE had chemo as well, I WOULD like to know how many experienced this frightening situation. I ask for I am going to submit this to Oncologists I am seeing who claim they have never had this happen. I am finding out this HAS indeed happened NOT just to FayeRaye. FayeRaye Had her Amp on July 20th, and had her first round of chemo On Tuesday.(CARBAPLATIN) FayeRayes blood work and temp have been excellent prior to Chemo.

Last night FayeRaye had a SEVERE temperature spike >> 105 << 9 hours after her first Chemo treatment, I WOULD be very interested in hearing HOW many have experienced this? I ask for it appears there are a few others who have also had this VERY frightening occurrence. YET the 2 oncologists I am seeing state /claim they have never seen or heard this happen from chemo. To me, it only makes sense, for the body is reacting to a venom, and fever is the bodies way of triyng to fight. But, it IS VERY dangerous and frightening, and only because I had yet to go to bed, had I even noticed her Lethargic behavior, and happened to feel the heat from her ears did I take her temp.  Had I NOT cooled her body down as I did, my fear s may have been far worse. I feel it is VERY important to take their temps, ESPECIALLY during cancer and chemo, yet again the Oncologists state they do not know of any other patients owners doing this. HUH?!? Am I out of the norm? If so, I feel it should not be, and especially feel ALL oncologists SHOULD be informed of this. I would also like to know for those that DID have this incident, if in fact they had a CBC repeated at that time. For FayeRayes CBC was totally normal prior to her 1st chemo and her white cells had gone through the roof during her spike. They are a little concerned over this, yet I feel it is related to this chemo reaction.
Thank you,
Eileen

Eileen, I can see why you would be worried. That is an uncomfortable fever. Zip got warm and was very heat sensitive during it all but even when her temp went up it was never that high. To be this soon after surgery and with white blood cells going up there maybe infection going on. We had the opposite problem, Zip's RBC and WBC went down but found she was a double dipper and so had to have her carbo every 4 weeks instead of 3 weeks. Sorry I couldn't help more. Are they suggesting antibiotics or is she still on them? There can be a host of other reasons for the temperature and it just happened all at the same time. Will be anxious to hear what you learn and can pass on to the rest of us.

Sorry to hear about FayeRayes troubles. Check out this post about reducing fevers with homeopathic belladonna for some links to members discussing how their dogs had fevers and what they did about it.

Tate had a high fever about one week after his third chemo treatment.  He had a lot of gastrointestinal stuff going on then, it all subsided and then they reduced his fourth (and final) dose.  Only minor problems with that dose and no fever.

It seems like there was something else going on, it takes awhile for chemo to affect them.  They always did Tate's bloodwork about a week after treatment, and his white blood cell count was always a bit low which is typical.
