Hi Everybody -

Mara had her first chemo treatment on Thursday with Carboplantin.  I have been giving her Cerenia once a day starting the night of chemo, and her last dose is supposed to be tonight.  The night of chemo and the next morning, she ate like normal.  Friday night she picked the beef and egg out of her dinner skipping veggies.  Saturday she only picked the chicken out of her breakfast skipping her tripe and cottage cheese (Mara is on a raw diet).  Then she ate a hamburger and a piece of venison sausage.  Luckily I have a friend who owns a pet feed store, and she sent me home with several options of high pro low carb canned food, and she ate some Evo kibble, canned foods, and some Honest Kitchen dehydrated food.  So I think I am getting enough into her quantity-wise.  I just want to know what other's have experienced as to how long the yucky feeling will last for her.  I seriously hope it will not last all the way through all 6 chemo treatments.

Thanks!

Beth

Hi,

My dog, Shelby, just finished her 6 rounds of chemo and this happened to her about 3 days POST chemo for her. She was great and then refused food or would only eat it out of my hand or mixed with other yummy stuff (also picked out the yummy stuff). It does pass. It usually lasted 2- 3 extra days and then back to normal. I hope this helps. Shelby's oncologist told me that it takes a few days for it to really get into the system so that was the delay reaction (day 3 always for us). I can't remember what kind of chemo Shelby had but I suspect it is the same as you. I do know that Shelby also had cerenia.

So for us, it was a rough side effect for all 6 treatments but it did pass quickly and Shelby would eat cookies, chicken, pure pumpkin so she was getting food. Just not her dinner. Oh and another thing I did for Shelby, which might help, was I put her meals in MY bowls and for some reason she ate out of that OR the hand feeding, which is messy but ... Shelby's a drama queen! 🙂

Good luck! Mara has a very darling face!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Oh Mara, you sure don't look happy there, I'm so sorry! I hope you feel better soon. You're so lucky your Momma has great connections with the pet food store people.

Meanwhile, have you seen these appetite tips in our Tripawds Nutrition blog? Something here is bound to help you feel better. Please let us know what works.

Mara is a beauty! So sorry she is feeling ill from chemo, but we can surely relate. My Polly went through 12 rounds of chemo all last spring and summer, and initially had a horrible time with it. She was getting doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide and got truly violently ill to the point of quickly dehydrating. She had excessive vomiting and diarrhea, and was not able to eat or drink ANYTHING at all for 2-3 days and we had to get emergency treatment for her. We had to manage her with Cerenia, metoclopromide, mirtazapine, and pepcid for close to 2 weeks at a time every treatment......I just gave the Cerenia at her worst time around 2 days after starting each chemo treatment, because you aren't supposed to use it any longer than 4-5 days straight. We got it managed after her first 2 chemo treatments but it was very difficult to watch her go through this. However, once we got her terrible side effects under control, she did very well......once or twice, she wasn't overly hungry for maybe a day but still managed to eat a bit till it passed. At least all the really bad stuff was halted or I probably would have just stopped the chemo, as I would not have been able to let her go through this during every treatment.

I don't know if this helps at all, but maybe if you think Mara is nauseated a little more than she should be from her chemo, maybe you can check with your vet to see if this drug combo may work for you. I think we should be able to give our pets as much help and comfort as possible, because they don't understand what is happening to them.

Best wishes for her and you, as you go through this together, and keep us posted on how she is doing.

Beth, someone via Twitter suggested

ondansetron (injectable preferably) day before chemo and several days after. Costco is cheapest option by a mile.

Here is some information about it (also known as Zofran)

Sorry your baby isn't feeling well, I know how you feel. I'm not sure if all vets do this but Chance usually gets an injectable dose of Cerenia before his treatment and then I give the pill afterwards. It usually hits him the morning after and lasts about 2 days. He will just lay around and not eat. I fixed him eggs this time and he didnt even touch that. He had his 6th and final dose this past Friday and today he is almost back to normal. I would say as long as she is drinking water and eating SOME food, then she is ok. Just give her a lot of TLC, but if it doesn't get better in the next day or so, you should probably call your vet and let them know. Hope this helps!

Chance is a 10ish Shetland Sheepdog Mix who was rescued from the shelter in January of 2013 and diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in September of 2013. He had a front left amputation and 6 rounds of carboplatin. He had a great 11 months and was diagnosed with lung mets on 8/23/14. He was released to the bridge on 8/28/14.
