Hi there

My dog Akira - after having had a rear leg removed in October due to bone cancer, is now into her 7th week of a combo Palladia and Losartan (after an initial 10 weeks with Carboplatin that wasn't producing any effect), and a couple weeks back x-rays confirmed a 35% reduction in the size of a small tumor that was growing in her lung.  So 'good'!

But with spring coming, I'm faced with choosing a dewormer for her.  With this new array of meds, local vets not that familiar with some of it, and the oncology group leaving that decision of dewormer to local vets, I'm just bouncing the question out to folks to see if any complications folks have had with any particular dewormer with chemo . . . and ideally the combo I'm having her on.

Might just book her back in the big city where her previous vet was who seemed to have a bit more knowledge and experience with things in general due to volume of work alone, if not focus on small animals.

Anyway, thanks in advance for whatever you may toss back my way.

Hi Akira and furmily, welcome!

So I'm actually not up on annual dewormers. Do you mean heartworm medication? Or literally, a dewormer medication? I've never had to give one to my dogs, I thought deworming was for puppies or for dogs who accidentally pick up worms somehow?

If you're talking about heartworm medication, I haven't heard of any interactions with chemotherapy. You can always post this question in Ask a Vet to see what our fairy vet mother thinks.

Also, you may want to check out the MIMIC study for Akira's lung met situation. Glad that at least the new treatment is working! We interviewed Dr. Bernard Seguin at Colorado State who mentioned that treatment here.

Hi there and thanks for the response and links (haven't spent much time here as of yet) . .

Yes, a general dewormer.  Quite common out here (rural Alberta . .  . although heartworm isn't really all that much of an issue here as it is further east and west of the prairies).  Despite three legs and chemo by dog is still out and about in the bush and fields and I'm having to get her away from coyote or whatever other beast's scat and whatever else she finds.

Well, out and about as much as the persistent deep snow is allowing for.
