On Bowser's xray late last month the radiologist found one met.  Today would have been our 6th carbo chemo treatment - but instead we met with our NEVOG oncologist Dr. R and decided to try metronomics . But our other dilemna is a severe ear infection that we have been treating for almost 2 months.  So we have decided to delay the start of metronomics  for a few weeks and see if we can use some bigger guns to get rid of this ear infection. Then we will x-ray again and see if there has been any change in or additon to the lung mets.  I hope we are doing the right thing - I would just like Bowser to get some comfort from this ear infection.  Otherwise Bowser is doing fantastic.  He is so fast on those 3 leggs.

Good luck with that ear infection. In case you haven't seen it, here's Jerry's metronomic treatment information.

Hope the infection goes away quickly!

It's hard to know what's the best thing to do, but you just make the best decision you can with the info you've got. We did MP with Abby. She lived a long time with a lone met.

All the best to Bowser!
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Discouraging news to be sure, but as Jackie said, dogs can live a long time with one met — or even more than one. We are sending pawsitive thoughts your way.

Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011
Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.

We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.

You know, Zeus had a met at the time of his diagnosis.  We almost didn't do the amp b/c of the poor prognosis that comes with having mets even before the amp surgery.  We decided to give it a shot and, 5.5 months later he is still bouncing around.  Five months is a long, long time when you were only given hope for about six weeks...

We just squeeze the most out of every day we have with him - and say a little prayer of thanks every single morning that we didn't listen to that vet's pessimistic prognosis and give up without a fight!

Don't give up hope!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Bowser you're in great hands an NEVOG, I know they'll get rid of that pesky ear infection and help you battle those dumb mets. Remember that lots of dawgs go on to live long lives even when mets happen, we know one who went two years after two were found!

Hope you feel better soon. Keep on keepin on, you Tripawd rock star!

hello everybody,

it's me Bowser testing out my typing skills. not too bad for a 3 legged hound dog.  i try to let my food slaves know that this lung met thing doesn't even hurt. but they still worry. and they have dumped at least 29 pounds of ear infection junk in my ear and i am sick and tired of this ear stuff.  so have no fear i am feeling fine and dandy and going to celebrate my 7th birthday in 10 days.  hope all you moms had a great day today and got lots of belly rubs - oh sorry maybe not exactly what you wanted - oh well.

bye now,

bowser

Glad to hear from you Bowser! Sorry about the ear infection buddy but hopefully that ear gunk will help!  You are a good pup for being so nice to your food slaves...telling them to not worry is what a really good pup does!

Hope to hear more about you AND hopefully we'll hear good news about the ear too (get it, "hear"!)

Hey Bowser,

In a show of solidarity both quad pugs came down with ear infections over the weekend oh-my.

Tri-pug Maggie was famous at the vet's office for her ear infections- I know they can be really hard to treat.  I hope the big guns can do some damage to that nasty ear gunk.

Great to hear he is otherwise doing fine.

Stupid mets....

Oh Bowser, you sound like you're doing great - let's hope that one met stays very lonely - stinkin mets! I agree that you are in good hands at NEVOG - we love all the folks there! I hope your ears are better soon too - ear innfections bite! On a side note - anyone ever hear of the blue powder ear wash recipe? I just received it from our breeder as BMDs are prone to ear infections...she said it works wonders!

Hang in there Bowser! Xoxo Sue
