I just wanted to share the treatment I'm doing with Cemil.  It's controversial, but I feel that he has as good a chance with it as with anything else.  It's the Hoxsey tonic

Our vet is an acupuncturist, well recommended for alternative methods, and this was her suggestion since I didn't want to do chemo.

Additionally, he takes

  • vitamins A & D
  • an antioxidant blend based on broccoli sprouts
  • 4000 mg of salmon oil
  • and ImmPower for an immune system booster.
  • He eats EVO (the poultry variety) with yogurt or cottage cheese, and I just started giving him Rescue Remedy to keep his attitude good.

The Hoxsey treatment has a long colorful history and has been banned in the US (what Cemil takes is actually called “hoxsey-like formula”).  You can find testimonies of people who would bet their life on it, and also official statements that there is no evidence whatsoever that it works.  I guess you can tell who I believe.

Hey, thanks for bringing this up. You are the first to mention it here on Tripawds, which is why we edited your topic title and post a bit, to make it easier for people to find.

My Mom did hear about the Hoxsey forumula when she was researching things that could help me, but she never found anyone who was using it. Can you:

1) share the name of your acupuncturist? Being that you are in the Bay Area, you are so lucky that there are lots of professionals out there who are open-minded enough to try it! That region is cutting-edge for a lot of canine therapies (Mom and Dad are both from San Francisco originally).

2) post some links that you might have about the Hoxsey tonic? We did add one to your post but if you have any specific ones that pawrents could go to, that would be so shelpful!

We really appreciate this information! Good luck with it, and of course keep us posted about how it's working for Cemil.

I looked into this for Tazzie but the holistic vet I use likes the Bone Stasis powder and I was already trying the artemisinin so I did not want to mix too many products.

Let us know how it goes!

Interesting...I've read of people using the essiac tea, but never heard of Hoxsey. Both of my vets - my regular vet, who I go way back with, and the ortho vet who is extremely highly regarded in the region, both said exactly the same thing when I asked about chemo for Cooper (had one "possible" lung met prior to amputation.) That any alternative treatment, as long as it did no harm, was just as likely as chemotherapy to work. Or not work. Based on pretty exhaustive research over the last few weeks, I've also come to this conclusion.

I'll be following Cemil's progress with interest.

What was the reasoning behind the ban of Hoxsey?

Hi all..thanks for your interest.  I was a little hesitant to post that, due to all the controversy, but I'm glad I did.  I looked for links to post, found a lot on a Google search, but many of them led nowhere.  Page no longer there.  Thanks Rene–you found a good one.

The Hoxsey Clinic, now called Bio-Medical Center in Tijuana Mexico, is still going strong and claims lots of people in remission long enough that there are no more cancer cells.  The problem seems to be that they haven't documented their success; Harry Hoxsey made the AMA mad by claiming to have a cancer cure, but he wasn't a doctor and didn't do it scientifically.  It's more of a folk remedy.  For anyone interested, I would suggest a Google search for “Hoxsey cancer treatment” and be prepared for strong opinions for and against.

We go to Bishop Ranch Vet Center in San Ramon (www.webvets.com), and the doctor is Kirsten Williams.  The prescription said “hoxsey-like formula”, which I found on the internet, made by Wise Woman Herbals and sold a few places much cheaper than through the vet center.  It smells horrible Ughand I can't imagine trying to swallow it, but Cemil is a trooper.  I squirt it into his mouth with a syringe, and only once has he blown it back into my face.

Shanna, the reasoning behind the ban is, on the surface, lack of scientific evidence.  There are people who think it also has to do with the amount of money spent on cancer treatments in this country.

I'll keep posting here each time we see Dr Williams.

Interesting discussion ... I found Wise Woman Herbals Hoxsey-Like Formula online at House of Nutrition.

Amazon also has a book about the Hoxsey controversy – When Healing Becomes a Crime: The Amazing Story of the Hoxsey Cancer Clinics and the Return of Alternative Therapies.
