We has our first checkup yesterday.   Zeus may need physical therapy to help learn to walk but other than that his checkup went very well. Another X-ray and currently only one nodule, so he had his first chemo treatment. So far he seems to be doing fine, although I understand it can take a couple of days before side effects occur.

His first treatment was with Carboplatin.  I'm interested in any experiences that others have had with this drug and how it compares to other drugs used in conjunction like Adriamycin.

Hi Zeus' family! I hope you don't mind I moved your post here, but this is a more ideal place to discuss treatments like chemotherapy. People are more likely to answer your questions and share their experiences this way.

Anyhoo, we didn't do carboplatin chemo with Jerry but what we've learned through the years is it's the "gold standard" for treating osteosarcoma. It's not as harsh as Adriamycin apparently and most oncologists use carboplatin. Here are some Tripawds News Blog Search Results About Carboplain you may find interesting.

I can share my Happy Hannah's experience with the Carboplatin for osteo. She had four rounds (as suggested by her Onco) and sailed through them with zero issues!!

Some dogs do experience a bit of nausea and maybe some lethargy and mybe a little diarrhea for a couple of days. The Onco will give you Cerenia to be used if any nausea occurs. Some Oncos suggest giving the Cerenia anyway for a few days as a way of being "pro active" I guess.

The thing with Carboplatin, if there are bad side effects thst linger on, you can always stop. The side effects will subside after it's out of the system.

So, I guess the ra ge is zero side effects for some, mild side effects for some and, for a few, pretty rough sde effects.

Really glad Zeus had a good check up today!! That's very, very good news!!

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Thankfully so far Zeus seems to be handling his first treatment well.  I was concerned because he had backtracked after the injection on Thursday. But today he is doing good. I was confused since I didn't think side effects showed up until a day or so after injection.

Im also still very confused on the different drugs that can be used and why certain protocols are chosen. I have been reading everything I can find including the survival guide.  We are changing oncologist from radiation to medical so I haven't had a chance to discuss the protocol choice.  I of course want to be informed as possible so I can make sure we are doing what us best for Zeus.

From my reading I understand that carboplatin is the drug of choice but sometimes it is combined with other drugs. I'm also unclear if supplements such as apocaps or medicinal mushrooms make sense during chemo.  I know not all vets are open to holistic appproaches but I believe that a multimodal approach is the best.

Nellie just had her 2nd round of carboplatin last Thursday. We gave an anti-nausea proactively with the first round 1x day for 4 days, didn't with 2nd round but had it on hand just in case. Zero loss of appetite or significant fatigue that we could see for either. We think it might be affecting the hair regrowth from the area shaved from the amputation but that's about it so far for side effects. Dose was increased slightly on 2nd round but veterinary oncologist said that the first dose was certainly well within the therapeutic range for Osteo treatment.

Carbo has been combined with other drugs, but as far as I can tell from reading it hasn't been shown that the combos are any better than carboplatin alone. Our Onco vet didn't hesitate to recommend Carboplatin alone 6x every 3 weeks as the treatment of choice for Nellies Osteosarcoma.

I would certainly discuss with your medical Oncologist to see what they have to say and recommend.

Zeus oncologist believes that there isn't significant difference between using carbo alone or mixed with other chemo drugs. The side effect risk is lower with carbo so that what we are going forward with carbo only for 4 treatments. His next treatment is next Thursday, hopefully it will go as we all as this one. Also put us at the half way mark.

so far Zeus has been in great shape physically.   I did notice when I gave him k9 immunity he started to have diarrhea so I'm going to wait until he's done with chemo.

Hey there Zeus and family 💗🐶

My girl Eurydice had 6 sessions of carboplatin followed by a little over one month of metronomic therapy and just had her 3rd doxorubicin session (out of 5) a couple of days ago.

She never had any effects at all and for carboplatin and doxorubicin she takes 1 cerenia pill the morning of her chemo plus 1pill a day for the following 2-3 days.

It has been completely painless and I want to believe it helped containing/slowing down the disease so far.

Sending you a big hug and super cuddles to your super boy 😘😘💕💞🐶

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

Hi Zeus and Family! I wanted to share my experience with our girl and her Carboplatin treatment.  We did a full round of treatment, and our girl had no side effects. She tolerated it very well. She continued to eat, her activity level was good, and she was most importantly very happy! The only thing we noticed was after her treatment, about 3 days later, her appetite would increase and she would want to eat anything and everything! But, I don't consider that a bad thing! Sending warm well wishes your way!

Hey Zeus and family! I am actually sitting in the waiting room at the UC Davis vet school oncology dept waiting for my Fionn to get his 5th round of carboplatin. Our experience has overall been very good. He gets it every 3 weeks. At any sign of serious side effects, I would and will stop.

No issues round 1

Some nausea after round 2. I had meds to give him and they helped but he seemed a little "down" for a week.

Round 3 his WBC count was too low for chemo and he had to wait another week. When he did get it he was medicated for nausea during chemo and for 4 days after and he did great! Didn't act differently at all

Round 4 we went back to a 3 week schedule and his WBC count was fine. Chest xray at this time showed NO mets, but a small pneumonia. He had NO symptoms, but he was put on 2 weeks of antibiotics anyway. Pre and post medicated for nausea and again just fine.

Carbo is the gold standard right now in vet and human treatment for osteo. Doxyrubicin can have serious side effects on the heart (SO glad Eurydice is doing well on it though!) and is more expensive- at least here at UCD. There is a current clinical trial underway using 4 rounds of carbo compared to 4 rounds of carbo and additonal treatment with a new drug Rapamycin. The results using rapamycin look good, but it is too early for it to become standard of care. Unfortunately, Fionn did not qualify for the trial.

I just recently added turmeric paste, fish oil and K9 Immunity to his daily regimen. Who knows if any of it will help, but it can't hurt! I hope Zeus continues to do well!
