Nellie up for 2nd round of carboplatin tomorrow. I was curious if:
1) The dosage is typically escalated as therapy went on, or if it was same dose each time
and
2) If side affects stayed about the same, or if subsequent rounds give either greater (or lesser) side effects.
Nellie's first round was uneventful, wondering if I can expect the same for this and subsequent ones or it there is typically some escalation.
TIA
Hey Tia and Nellie!!!
Really glad to hear Nellie sailed through her first chemo!
The first question really needs ro be asked of Nellie's Onco. Simply because protocols can vary, not only ddepending on the dog, but depending on the Onco's approach. Maybe he (or she) started with a lower dose and maybe not. Just to show how much variation can take place, depending on the first dose, sometimes the second dose can be lowered if there were bad side effects.
As far as the second question, and I hate to sound repetitive, but depending on the dog, reactions can vary dog to dog!. Chemo is cumulative and some dogs may, or may not, show some side effects with additional treatment...and, again, some may not!!!
My experience with my Happy Hannah is she sailed through ALL of her four rounds of Carboplatin with ZERO side effects. So that's just in the "for whatever it's worth" category!
Let us know how it goes, okay? Really glad to hear that sweet gal is doing well...And it still gets better!!
Hugs!
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
My Otis was on the maximum dose for his weight each round; however, the onco can vary dosage based on how well the dog tolerated the chemo and the blood test results. We had slight increase in side effects each round, particularly with nausea, and Otis ended up on daily Pepcid AC, in addition to the Cerenia which I gave as needed. (No noticeable nausea with round 1). Nothing so severe that I considered stopping the chemo.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
1) The dosage is typically escalated as therapy went on, or if it was same dose each time
Christine's assessment is correct. It all depends on how your pup tolerates treatments. We often see dosages decreased a little bit to better manage side effects, if any happen.
2) If side affects stayed about the same, or if subsequent rounds give either greater (or lesser) side effects.
See questions #1 🙂 If you haven't already be sure to pick up a copy of The Dog Cancer Survival Guide . It goes into a ton of detail about this kind of thing. Of course everyone here is happy to share their experience too 🙂
