"But I can tell you, I keep looking at that list everyday to remind myself why we chose to go with a metronomic protocol instead."
I just wanted to share, particularly for Pollygirl, that your words of advice helped me to help a friend of mine just last night in an unrelated fashion.
I dear friend of mine is in hospice, dieing from Parkinsons and Alzheimers. And I was there visiting him and his wife last night. After all the kids had gone home and it was just my friends and I, his wife became distraught with all the emotions she was feeling about making this big decision to put him in hospice. She was doubting her decision about not moving forward with a feeding tube. And I remembered the above advice and was able to console her by telling her that maybe she needed to re-read the Living Will that her and her husband drew up. Because this is what they had decided and this is what he wants. So the lessons that we learn here not only help us to deal with our relationships with our beloved four-legged families, but also in other aspects in life. And I am thankful that I have a place that I can discuss my fears and feelings and I can learn ways to cope better with this sort of process.
Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury. Her amp was on 10/1/12. She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera. We are all watched over by our angel Brendol, who was dx with OSA 1/30/13, amp on 2/6/13, and left us on 8/20/13.

Than you for sharing that. I couldn't agree more. The journeys we find ourselves on with our beloved pets and the wonderful community that we become a part of here gives us valuable lessons and wisdom that we can carry into other parts of our lives, especially about a subject that is still so taboo in our culture.

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
I hope Brendol is doing well after her first chemo treatment. Cadence was a little bit tired after each session but other than that she had no problems with it. All the options after the initial amp can be so confusing. We weren't sure about doing the chemo either but then decided to go for it. I'm glad we did. We wanted to do whatever we could to help her. I hope you and Brendol are enjoying the day together. Keep us updated on how she is doing.

Ditto! How is Brendol doing today?

Hey there,
All the decisions one has to make along this journey are up to each individual. There are so many factors that play into each decision: health, money, quality of life, how the individual dog will respond, potential side effects etc etc. no decision is easy and it is hard to beat yourself up with could've s and would'ves because we only want to make the best choices for our beloved companions. However we have to of be so hard on ourselves and remind ourselves that we tried to do what we could and what we thought was best. Bruno responded well to chemo for a good while. He was on both lomustine and later cyclophosphamide. It was the later that gave him trouble due to ( in hind sight) prolonged exposure. Brendol knows you love her. Good luck and best wishes.

Thanks everyone. Brendol did really well all week. No loss of appetite or stool problems. What a relief. The only she's worrying me about now is that she now has decided she doesn't want to get off the bed on her own. And if she doesn't feel she needs to go out to potty there is no way I'm getting her off the patio. So I'm lifting her off the bed and taking her out the front of the house to potty. Guess she's got me trained. I did notice her elbow is scuffed, so maybe she fell and scraped it when I wasn't around and that's why she no longer wants to get off the bed on her own. But otherwise we are doing really good.

Hi everyone. I've been a little quiet lately because things have been going pretty good. Brendol had her first chemo about 10 days ago and she never showed any side effects after this round. I do know that that may change with subsequent rounds, but I'm glad we made it through the first one.
She's maneuvering around on 3 legs really well. Some hesitation occasionally on the stairs but I'll let her have that. And we are finally getting some hair back! Yay!
Brendol's first CBC was this morning to get ready for round two. Her white blood count was a "little low" per the vet (3.9 when normal is 6-17). Sounds low to me. But I'm a little bit of a worry wart about all this. Her platelets were a tiny bit low too... just 196,000 when the bottom of normal is 200,000. That number isn't too bad. So we are getting scheduled for round two in about 10 days. They'll check it again that morning. I really really don't want my baby girl to get sick.
That's our update. I hope this note finds everyone else doing well.

Hi! did they say if her neutrophils were ok? that is usually the concern with chemo (that's what was so low with jill's numbers). Did they give her antibiotics or anything?
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013.
