Please help me? Paz came home Monday after having amputation of his front left leg on Saturday. Pazzy is doing good on eating, drinking, & going to the bathroom. What I'm worried about how fast he is breathing & Panting! He will be laying there & then all of a sudden he will jump up &run down the hall &in circles, not Pazzy! Is this normal?

Oh I know how scary this must be for you! Is he still on pain meds? They can make them a little manic. Does your vet have a 24 hour service you can call and ask?

I am not a vet and my shelby was a little nutty but didn't do those things but I wanted to weigh in since I know how hard it is and how scary it is.

Hang in there!!! Keep us posted!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I Know this is a very scarey time....more so for you than Pazzy!

OKAY....DEEP BREATHS.......B R E A T H E.......B R E A T H E.....Based on m y Happy Hannah's experience, this is very normal!
My Happy Hannah whined, panted, paced and would not sit down for more than a few minutes at a time for nineteen hourse straight! I was a complete basket case and thought I had made the worse decision in the world! In fact I thought that for the first two weeks!

But once her sparkle started coming back, I knew I had made the best decision for my girl!

What kind of pain meds is Pazzy taking? They can definitely cause crazy reactions, but they are very necessary tohelp control the pain. Eating, pooping, drinking....al l real l y good signs!

I'm afraid y ou may stil l have a few sleeless nights ahead. W are al'll here for you. Say connected to us. You are not alone, okay?
I'm no vet and, of course, call your vet if you have concerns. It could be he needs to have his pain meds upped.

I know this is soooooo hard right now. Just try and stay calm and reassure Pazzy.

Sending you hugs and a whole lot of chocolate! Eat lots and lots of chocolate!

Sally and Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Hello, wildheart. My Molly J had very similar symptoms the first several days she was home after amputation. She was taking tramadol, carprofen, enrofloxacin, and amoxicillin. It's a lot for your pup's body to adapt to, but it's better than the pain. Just try to keep him comfortable. This will pass. Stay connected to this community as you go through this recovery time. They helped me remain calm and understand what to expect. Positive energy sent your way.

Thank you both so much. You have eased some of my stress tonight. Paz is on Ramada 75 half tablet every 12 hours, Rilexine 300 mg every 12 hours,& Tramadol 50 mg every 8 to 12 hours.

Is it Rimadyl?

And the Rilexine...is that pain pill or maybe.an antibiodic?

It could be that the Tramadol...the pain med...needs to be given a little more frequently. You always want to stay ahead of the pain and not try to "catch up".
I know my Happy Hannah had the Tramadol every six to eight hours

Again...the "no vet" disclaimer!

Hang in there.....it takes.a.bit.of.time, but it gets.soooooo much better!

Definitely sounds like the pain medication is having some side effects. Don't worry though, it's quite common in most dogs. Do your best to keep him quiet and let your vet know about the symptoms. Nine times out of ten a small adjustment to the dosing amounts and schedule is all it takes to get him into a calmer state.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you all for your help! I appreciate it so much. I started givingPaz pain medicine every 8 hours instead of 12 like the Vet was giving him & his breathing as slowed down some & Panting isn't as bad. Before I thought he was panting so hard that it would do something to his heart. For right now we are doing ok.

GOOD! You know your dog better than anyone and good for you for being so diligent!

Balancing the pain meds can be tricky sometimes and every dog responds.differently...but 12 hours just seemed like a long time in between! Of course, always check with your vet. Glad the adjustment see.com ed to help. It's still not pawty time yet though! It wi l be soon! Hang in there..this is the rough part but it doesn't last forever!

Hugs!

That is great to hear. I agree, 12 hours is a very long time inbetween, especially so soon after surgery. But yes, do check with the vet to make sure its all good. Glad he's getting some rest. How's his appetite and bowel movements? Doing OK there?

I am new here, my dog Aggie had her amputation surgery on 7-7, and there was about a 48 hour span there maybe on days 3-5 that she was very agitated, restless, and irritable.  She would jump up and run to a different room.  I think at that stage their meds from surgery are totally wearing off, and the pain may be setting in more intensely.  I also think the pain meds mess with the minds a little.  Hang in there.  We're still struggling but things are looking up for my Aggie.  Best wishes!!
