Hi All

Boomer has done really well the past few days, she has walked as far a one block now, it is hard to slow her down. But today she is not feeling well, she won't eat any treats, though she did eat her breakfast. She wanted to eat grass this morning and she has that pathetic wow is me beagle look about her. I was told by the Vet Surgeon that she did not need Pepcid AC anymore because the MCT was now gone, but one would think that the stomach acids will still be around for a while. Maybe she feels sick because she has had 2 weeks of Tramadol in her, I don't know. I thought of bringing her to te Vets today but I don't want to be bring her if it is unnecessary. Any suggestions.

As long as she ate her breakfast, I wouldn't worry too much.

I don't know about you, but prior to cancer, I didn't think twice about unusual rest, panting, looks, etc. Now, every little thing is monitored so closely.

I don't know about Boomer, but Charlie (I think) gets bored with certain treats. I have a graveyard of bones (the kind they chew, the rawhide) that he used to go nuts for and consume in a sitting, now just sit there. He used to take Rimadyl as a treat, but now I have to put it in food to get him to eat it. It's beef flavored, for crying out loud!

Maybe she's just bored. As far as the grass chewing, he tends to hack and throw up after eating it, which I have explained to him won't let me know if he's nauseous from chemo or the stupid grass!

Good luck with Boomer, but I wouldn't worry too much unless she stops eating regular food for a longer period.

Good Morning!  I am new here myself, but I also have a Boomer.  Usually, I call him Boomie though.  But I saw Boomer's name here, so I thought I would just say hi, and wish your Boomer a good recovery.  It's been a couple of years for me, but I can remember that first week or so post amp. feeling almost like I had just brought home a new baby!  The whining, the sleepless nights, the struggling to find a sense of "normal" in all this...

It will get easier.

Take care,

Cindy

Cindy and Boomie

Boomie's leg was amputated due to osteosarcoma on May 15, 2008.  He enjoyed over two and a half years of life after that, one day at a time.  He died on Feb. 21, 2011.

Hi Boomer's dad,

After Mag's amp she stayed on pepcid for 14 days, until suture removal.

I don't remember if I gave you this link before, but I updated the details about Maggie's amputation and chemo including all the meds she was on.  You can check here if you like.

Its a good sign I think that she eats something- when Mag didn't feel good she wouldn't eat anything.  I would think there could still be some tummy upset with all the surgery drugs.  Is she on an antibiotic?  Sometimes that can cause stomach issues.

Otherwise she sounds like she is doing well.

I agree; if she's eating her breakfast and walking without a problem, those are great signs. Did you happen to see our Nutrition Blog post yesterday about not eating?

Ask yourself; based on how she looks today, would you have taken her in if none of this (the amputation) had occurred? What would you have done?

I'm all for calling your vet if you have concerns because only you know her well enough to tell if there's something really unusual about her behavior.

During this recovery time, we pawrents always have a heightened sensitivity to everything that seems not normal.  I've come to the realization that now this is our normal (the ups and downs of this recovery time.)  In Mackenzie's case, she lost her appetitie because of the tramadol so it was a real challenge to get her to eat even her favorite foods.  So Boomer just might be having an off day and like everyone said, by the fact that she did eat and walked that far, that's a great sign.  I kept in close touch with my vet during this time so it will probably make you feel better if you do call your vet about this.  Good luck with everything!

Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Hoping that Boomer is already feeling better......I haven't had to deal with loss of appetitie, but I do think Kami is right.  We're so in tune with everything that if they look at us cross-eyed, we question it.  Regardless, your know your baby better than anyone and here's to brighter days!

I feel so stupid about these things sometimes even though we went
through it all.  I just gave Ruthie some space about what she did and
didn't want to do.  If she over did it and just wanted to rest or had
enough rest and wanted to get on with it.  And her appetite did or
didn't follow.  That doesn't mean I wasn't concerned or careful, but I
really felt she had to feel that things were OK.  Trust your judgment,
you know your girl.

Boomer's Dad, it's been said already but I'll echo it anyways: for a long time post-op I was constantly on alert for the slightest (and I mean slightest) change in Catie's behaviour - seriously, I was beyond cross-eyed in my intense scrutiny. Good grief she must have gotten tired of me as a hovering shadow.

Most vets are very patient with the concerns of guardians and quite accustomed to them as well. If you need reassurance, by all means call. That's what they're there for.

It sounds like her appetite overall is good. Up and downs post-op are pretty typical I think.

Hope Boomer's feeling better already!
