I've been following along but didn't have anything to share until now.
What a scary accident! No wonder Bella is so skittish! It's great to hear that she is making progress.
I know dogs and cats are different but I wanted to share a story about my Tripuggle Elly. Elly was hit by a car at 7 months old and lost her right rear leg as a result, I adopted her when she was 10 months old. I got her on a Saturday and took her our for a short walk and stroller ride on Sunday. I took her out again on Monday and didn't even get a block with her in the stroller and she started shaking. It took a minute for me to realize that the noisy commute traffic on Monday, even though it was a street away, was scaring her! At this point she was about 2.5 months post op but didn't get out for walks at her foster home so hadn't been exposed to car noise. Once we got her away from the noise she settled down. Every time we were out walking she would stop and watch as each car went by. At first she needed treats and reassurance for every car going by in order to get her going again. Over time she got better about cars going by and would only stop for really loud cars or trucks. Now she rarely stops even when the garbage truck goes by.
Bella will get more and more confidence each time she comes out and has a good experience. Don't push her, let her go at her own pace. I'm not sure how you reward or encourage brave cat behavior but Elly sure got lots of treats and pets

Ditto Karen! Thank you for sharing Elly's story!! Animals are sensitive and very intelligent, just like people they do associate scary and bad things happening and have fear like a PTS! The way you reward and encourage brave cat behavior is the same way you do with dogs 😉
Lots of rewards with treats, love, pets, encouraging, play and of course time - the more good behavior she associates with being out and nothing bad happening ,she will become more brave and confident! Always provide a good safe place for her to be able to leave and feel safe when she needs too.
Hugs!

Hello All-
I wanted to give everyone an update.
Bella has been doing great. This past week she has taken some amazing steps. Recently Bella has been coming out on her own and just kind of meandering around on the second floor. I took advantage of this 2 nights ago. I was able to coax her down our stairs (all carpeted) to the 1st floor landing. Little girl got lots of treats and snuggles during the process and after. She's been doing amazing.
This evening, my husband was walking past the steps and saw Bella sitting on the turn landing. That's about 3 steps down she did all on her own. I'm so encouraged by these actions she's taking.
Now I have a general question. How long does it take for fur to grow back in? Hers has started but you can still see her skin through it. It's not thick.
Thanks everyone for all the support and advice. I truly can't thank you guys enough!
Becky and Super Star Bella
WAY TO GO BELLA 🌟👏🏻😻 Way to go Becky MAJOR Progress!!🎉
She will continue getting more confident and keep doing more!
The more good and positive that happens when she is out ,will gain her confidence back and that bad memory will get farther and farther away!
Keep doing exactly what your doing! Love, treats , encouragement .
Just you wait and see😉 She will continue to amaze you !
It took 6 months for Purrkins to grow all his fur back. I have no idea, if that is the norm for all kitties.
Thanks for the update and keep us posted please.
So happy to hear Miss Super Star Bella is showing you she is super star on 3 legs!💕
Hugs!

What a great report! I'm so hoppy she conquered the stairs, what an achievement!
Fur regrowth tends to vary. It's just like people and the rates at which our hair grows. Some of us grow hair faster, others not so much. I'll bet within six months you'll see Bella's fur all shiny and new again.

Way to go Bella! Great job! And it's still so early in recovery and here you are mastering stairs.
Keep these great updates coming! We love hearing about your progress and how you were starting to enjoy life again.

Great news. Glad she is venturing out. Although my tripawd was a dog, I found that the best bet is to let them set the pace for what they want to try and when (just making sure that the environment is generally safe).
