I'm scheduling a consult tomorrow afternoon with Trouble's vet. I think all we are looking at is arthritis and the damned blasted Texas heat, and am hoping some of you dealing with long term arthritis could refresh my memory on some of the medication choices.

She is already taking glucosamine, and has had elevated liver enzymes when taking Remadyl in the past. I know this topic has been covered in the past, and will do a search later this evening, but thought some of you might just throw out some starting points for me. You don't have to go into great detail unless you want to.

How 'bout Adequan shots?  Comet did them until I found out she doesn't have arthritis.  Comet takes Rimadyl for inflammation in general.  But she's had really good luck on it and no liver problems.

But Shanna, I have to admit Comet can act like a puppy when I get her to swim in her cheap pool.  It's just 8 feet x 4 feet and we make her do about 10 minutes of paddling.  She's not a big fan of swimming but she does it. She gets out and feels great!  Just don't do it everyday.  Even for myself  - I feel great if I've put in at least 30 minutes a day of tread-milling.  Otherwise, my joint get stiff and ache.

We also had a bad results with Rimadyl (one year ago tomorrow Harley almost died after being on Rimadyl for 3 days).  We use Dasuquin.  I've heard really great things from several people about Glyco-Flex III.  Also, I noticed Organic Pet Superfood (one would think I work for the company, since I keep mentioning them in postswink) has a Joint formula … haven't used it, just read about it when researching their Immunity product.  http://www.pets.....ts/joints/

Sorry I can't be of more help.  So hot and humid here as well, which I think is slowing Harley down some.  Wish you the best at the Vet!

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.

My Pitbull Kona has had severe arthritis for several years, involving her spine, elbows, hips, and knees.  She ulcerated 3 years ago on Deramaxx but does well on 200 mg of Zubrin daily.  She also gets gabapentin 300 mg daily, amantadine 100 mg daily, 100 mg Tramadol twice daily, Dasuquin, fish oil, and 600 mg SAM-E daily.  Adequan did not work for her but is always worth a try.  She also gets acupuncture every 5 weeks and that has helped her the most!  I also rotate several Chinese herbs which do seem to make a difference.  I did not see much difference when I added the SAM-E but she mostly takes that for her cancer (leimyosarcoma of the colon) along with 250 mg of Vit C and 400 mg of Vit E.

She is not a tripawd but I imagine the issues are similar.

Thank you all for the responses and the links.  I'm postponing the consult until next week, Dr F is out of town this week.  That will give me plenty of time to research and know what questions I want to ask.

I gave her a dose of tramadol after her bad day yesterday and she seems quite a bit better today.

Pam, oh wow!  How old is Koda? and is arthritis common in the breed?  I know several folks battling the stiffness in older pibbles.

Interesting conversation with my vet the other day about acupuncture...he said he is totally not into holistic medicine but acupuncture actually has shown improvements during trials compared to chiropractic manipulations which has never shown any results.  But I can't imagine Comet doing acupunture!  She'd be so scared.

well Magic had his third massage today and it really isn't massage, it is body work and joint movements and he is asleep by the end...and she did almost two hours again...and for me too...she got there at 2:45 and left at 6:30.....now she did have to set up a table and there is some down time but boy we get out money's worth

Shana I have meloxicam chews 4.4 mg, I also have Dasuquin for dogs 60 lbs and over...i'm not sure how many are left in the bottle.  I do not intend to give either to Magic anymore.  You are welcome to those if they will help and are appropriate for Trouble...

just let me know

Along with Tripawd Tai I also have a 13 yr old Lab with degenerative joint disease as a result of old age. I have them both on
Recovery SA
. I have noticed a huge improvement and actually have taken the older lab off of his daily Metacam. He bounces around like a puppy. A number of my horsey friends have their horses on the Equine version of Recovery and have also experienced tremendous results. Obviously not everything works for every animal but it might be worth a try.

Laura and Tai

Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.

I did acupuncture and it was AMAZING. I thought I'd be scared too but the doctor was so calm and gentle I didn't even know she was sticking stuff in me.

You got my vote on acpuncture. It made a HUGE difference in my bum knee.

Shanna,

Kona will be 12 years old in September and yes Pitties commonly battle arthritis.  I think it because their pain threshold is so high that they overdo it and strain the joints and ligaments.

Hi Admin,

Thanks for posting the link to Recovery. I will write a review in the next couple of days. It is also available in liver flavored tablets which both Tai and Bandit eat like treats. Tonight I spoke with another Recovery SA user and she has also taken her dog off of daily Metacam since starting on Recovery. He was unable to stand up unaided without Metacam when he was on his prior Glucosamine supplement.

Interesting on the Recovery SA!  I've looked at that one in the past but haven't heard of 'reviews' of others using it...  Something to think about if the Glycoflex III I use doesn't work anymore.
