About 9 weeks ago, my dog had a
total hip replacement due to previously being hit by car some years
ago. Last week, she started to limp on her front leg and I thought it
was due to overcompensating for her healing hip. I took her in to have
it checked out, and they discovered a tumor on her bone.

We scheduled an emergency amputation, and a biopsy was done on her leg
after the fact. I found out that it is a hemangiosarcoma.
She was in
today to check her heart and spleen with an ultrasound, as this is where this particular cancer starts, and there
doesn't appear to be any tumors on them, or on any of her other major
organs. According to my vet, this is very rare. Due to the aggressive
nature of this cancer, the median life expectancy is around 3 months.
The prognosis is poor, even with chemotherapy, it will not prolong her
life that much. I have decided not to go the chemotherapy route, because
the few months she would gain would not be worth putting her through
it.

I stumbled across some very basic information on apSTAR (Autologous
patient specific tumor antigen response), and was wondering if anyone
had any experience with it, or knows much about it. Were there any side affects? Do you know of
any data on effectiveness of this treatment? I'd like to not put her
through any more long vet visits or procedures unless there is a decent
chance of prolonging her life for a few more years, and that it would be
a good quality of life. I do not want to put her through anything that
will extend her time here, only to have her suffer or feel poorly from
the treatment.

I know she still has some time before the cancer will affect the quality
of her life, so we are enjoying each and every day for what it is. I
don't know what to expect down the road, due the her tumor and cancer
situation being pretty much unheard of (hemangiosarcoma in the legbone,
and visible nowhere else) according to my vet and her colleagues. I love
her so much, but I am preparing for her final days. If there is
something out there that has a decent chance of helping her, I'd like to
do what I can.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome and thanks for joining. This is the first we've heard of the apSTAR treatment, hopefully other members may be able to provide some feedback. Please update this topic with any more information you find out.

Hemangiosarcoma is ruff, just remember... you pup is living with cancer, not dying from it! Does she have a name?

Hi.  I also have not heard of this treatment but would be interested to learn from you if/when you learn more, so please do post anything you find out.

My dog Tshuvah has the same diagnosis, hemangiosarcoma with primary bone tumor, as your dog.  Upon diagnosis two months ago, Tshuvah did not have any evidence of the cancer anywhere else in her body.  I was told that her life expectancy after diagnosis was 1 - 2 months but perhaps 3 months is more accurate because we are just past the two month mark and she is doing well.  I made the same decisions are you have about follow-up treatment and care, for the same reasons.  You can read more about Tshuvah and our journey with hemangiosarcoma at my blog, the link is below in my signature.

This is a very challenging diagnosis.  Please continue to post, ask questions, and I will watch for your posts in case I can be of any help.  I might be the only active member now who has a tripawd with hemangiosarcoma, although there have been members in the past.

Best wishes,  Beth

Beth with my beloved Tshuvah, 10 year old "TaosDog". Provisional diagnosis osteosarcoma on 6/10/10, amputation of left foreleg same day, firm diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma 6/24/10. Set free on 9/9/10.  Treasured forever.

that sounds amazing!!!  Do you know the cost of it?  I tried a search online but there were few results and I could find nothing on cost....I wouldn't think it would be very cheap 😛
