Just to give a short background, my pup Spirit was diagnosed with Synovial Cell Sarcoma. The tumor is around his ankle area on his front, left leg. At the time of treatment, we were given 3 options; amputation, radiation and chemotherapy. We were set to go with amputation but we were so dazed and confused we backed out. One big concern was that he is a senior dog with arthritis in his hind legs. We then sought out a second opinion and decided to treat him with radiation and metronomic chemotherapy . So far, our experience with the radiation and chemo has been really positive. No side effects at all. The tumor growth has been slowed and hasn't changed too much in a year's time. He's eating a home cooked cancer diet with added supplements. However, there is some edema in his upper leg area which is worrisome. He is eating well, happy and eager to go on walks but I know edema usually doesn't mean good things and I know we'll have to make some decisions again whether it be to amputate his leg or go with radiation (if it is an option). The oncologist suggested another medication called Palladia to help with the edema but it is time intensive and expensive. Not that we don't think our dogs is worth it but I'm searching out other options first.

Has anyone dealt with edema and do you have any advice/suggestions? How will I know that it's bothering him or if he is in pain from the swelling?

Oops. I guess I should have done a search on edema. I read through some previous posts and found some information on supplements to try such as SerraGold. Anyone have success with that?

Anyone in the forum try Palladia?

Spirit is going in for an appointment next week so hopefully we can get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, please share any advice/suggestions. Thank you.

Hi Spirit! Thanks for joining us, you are magnificent looking!

Honestly I don't have any experience in dealing with an edema but as you found, others have dealt with it and I'm sure there are active members here who can chime in. You might also want to post in our "Ask a Vet" Forum topic.

As for Palladia, oh yes, Tripawds members have lots of experience with it as these search results show (these are just a few of the results, there are many more).

Don't feel badly about looking for other options because of the expense of Palladia. We all understand how finances do play into these decisions, really. And when it comes down to it, dogs want their people to be happy, not worried about $$, so it's really OK.

What is your routine for metronomics ? We  hardly hear about it being used for synovial cell sarcomas, usually just osteosarcoma.

Great. Thanks for the advice. I'll look over the posts about Palladia.

Metronomics routine is Cyclophosphamide and Piroxicam. It's been over a year and Spirit has done well on the drugs. He's beginning to have other things come up like the edema but the tumor growth hasn't really changed too much.
