Our Bernese mountain dog is home today after having had his right rear leg amputated (cancer). The wound is weeping due to extent of edema prior to the op & the vet has advised to use incontinence nappies to protect the wound, and to remove the nappies when he wants to go to the toilet. But he wants to go to the toilet 5-10 times a day and nappy changing on a big dog is easier said than done. Has anyone had experience with these nappies or devised a better solution ?

Hi Franck, welcome. What is your dog's name?

So it sounds like the nappies (aka "diapers" right?) are getting in the way of his toileting? It's certainly awesome that he's going to the bathroom so soon after surgery (many dogs don't) but I can totally see what a hassle that is.

I wonder if you can ask your vet to drain the seroma in order to speed things along and eliminate the need for the nappies? It's a quick painless process. Honestly I can't recall anyone using them for this specific reason but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Hopefully others in the community will have ideas for you.

Hi Franck and welcome to our communityheart

So your dog is a Bernese Mountain Dog, absolutely love them, so gentle and sweet heart

My girl is a Great Dane and has lost her front leg

to osteosarcoma, a little over two months ago.

Luckily we never had to use nappies so no advice there, I'm afraid...

I agree with Jerry it is good he is peeing so often although you are probably not so happy with that, given the circumstances ... can't blame you ...

Just wanted to welcome you and your boy and send you lots of pawsitive energy, we are all here for you heart

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

I cannot imagine having to change the happiest on a three legged big dog.  It was hard enough changing Otis' t-shirt when he accidentally peed on it!   Also cannot give any advice, but sympathize with you!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Don't have any specific advice regarding the nappies...other than there has to be a better way! Now what that might be, I have no clue! The drain Jerry mentioned sounds like it may be a solution tnough.

Is it possible to sort of cut a "wedge"'out of the nappies so his "pee wee" isn't covered?

Sorry you find yourself here, but you now have a whole team cheering for your sweet pup! Pictures when you can!

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
