Had anyone else experienced drainage from their pets wound? If so, how long did it last?

Also, did anyone's pet develop any bruising after surgery?

Koda has developed 2 bruises - one right under his incision site and the other on his belly. we did take him to the vet and he said that it was normal, but it seems to be getting darker/worse.

I've also found that Koda is very alert and starting to act like his old self again. He wants to try to do everything that the other dogs do and he just gets so upset when we don't let him.

Other than that he is doing great! He's been walking very well. Gets tired and has to rest every few feet or so but he is doing awesome!

Thanks for any and all help!

Hi Amber!

Had anyone else experienced drainage from their pets wound? If so, how long did it last?

Absolutely. It's called a "seroma ." Click on the link for lots of info about it.

Also, did anyone's pet develop any bruising after surgery?

Ditto! It's pretty typical and as long as it's not a deep brown color, it's probably nothing to worry about. Do you have any photos you can share with us?

I'm really glad to hear Koda's recovering nicely. You're doing your part very well too! Keep regulating his activity so he's just resting right now, and he'll have a smooth recovery.

My husband just had surgery two weeks ago.  I've been teasing him about how I'm taking care of his wound, the same as I did with the dog's, and taking the two of them out for a walk after feeding them.  Even joked about the big "poop watch".

The reason I bring up his surgery is that he has much better English language skills than the dog.  I could ask him how things felt, where things were tender, what hurt, etc.  All the things we want to know about our dogs!  First, he didn't have drainage, but there was small seroma (fluid), and gentle massage around the wound (not on it) helped with reabsorption and he said it felt good.  He also had some bruising show up a few days after surgery, and the bruising got a bit bigger and darker over the next few days -- but he said it didn't hurt at all.  He couldn't tell it was bruised based on touching, only by looking and seeing the bruise.

So yes -- it sounds normal, and if my husband's experience is in line with the dogs', then the bruising probably doesn't hurt as much as it looks-like-it-hurts, and gentle massage near the wound can help with the fluid and it probably feels good.

Peace,

Jennifer, I love that we are able to use your husband as a "case study" for our furbabies! GREAT idea! Very informative!! Although, when we do a happy poopicon_png dance for him, he may not think it was such a good idea!!

Glad to know the bruising is not painful. Good to know!

Yeah Amber, pretty much like Jennifer's husband, my Happy Hannah had some colorful bruising a few days after surgery that deepened in color before it went away.

Many dogs have fluid drainage. As long as it's not stinky or bloody and infected looking, that's pretty normal. My Happy Hannah didn't have the leakage, but others can tell you how long it lasts.

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR KODA FEELING BETTER!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 And it's still very, very, early in rrecovery and it gets better!!

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS..Jennifer, be sure and take your hubby for a drive thru cheeseburger gor being su h a good boy!way-cool

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
