Hi Guys,

I am wondering if anyone out there knows of an all-natural supplement that works just as good if not better than Rimadyl? I am concerned to give this to Nico every day for the rest of his life as it can damage his liver and or kidneys.

I have found a supplement on Super Supplements for liver and kidney support called Mercola Healthy Pets Liver and Kidney Support. It’s a powder form.  It also has decaf green tea exact, which my oncologist is happy about.

Also, I just ordered a Ruffwear Webmaster Harness for Nico.

Thanks so much!

Breana & Nico

  • Also, how do I post pictures?

Thank you for the info about your oncologist! Looks like your clinic is on our Tripawds Foundation brochures mailing list so they should have received some of our materials. I do like the way your onco thinks, I might need to have her on Tripawd Talk Radio some day.

As for the NSAID supplement...Yes, NSAIDs can cause liver damage but as long as you're vigilant about periodic labwork, it should be just fine. Many dogs are on it for years. Plus, NSAIDs have been shown to have anti-tumor properties too, so double bonus.

If you're still wanting to try something else, I haven't heard of the one you referred to but I have heard many good things about a holistic supplement called Dog Gone Pain.

Hi Breana & Nico

I can completely understand your shock to the situation. I have a ten year old Doberman named Shyla. She is a very fit and active dog.

Shyla was diagnosed with osteosarcoma two and half weeks ago. She had her from right leg amputated exactly two weeks ago. The whole thing happened pretty fast. I am still trying to figure out the next steps and if chemotherapy is the right thing to do for her.

What I can tell you is that within 8 hours of surgery is that she was up and walking around on 3 legs. It was definitely an adjustment at first, however, she was starting to go for walks after 3 days. Two weeks later she is climbing up and down stairs, going for 30 minute walks and even jumping into the car ( I am know I am not supposed to let her jump into the car, but try telling her this).

One of the things I noticed right after the surgery is that shyla was a little anti social. Typically, she is right beside me at all times. I think that this was more of an adjustment for me then her. I assume that this should have been expected given the nature of the surgery.

Just like all dogs, Dobermans are pretty resilient and it is great to see her moving around with no pain. I have no regrets in deciding to amputate her leg, it was the right thing to do.

I did buy her a ruff wear harness yesterday, it seems to work well. Its been a little awkward trying to get it to fit properly though.

Happy to chat about my experiences with amputation with a Doberman.

If anyone has any advice on chemo, I would to know your thoughts?

chris

Shyla's Dad, welcome. Your future posts won't need approval so post away. Also please consider starting a brand new topic so we can follow along with your journey. Shyla sounds like an awesome dog!

Thanks for sharing your insight, it's so comforting for others just starting out.

We're glad the Webmaster is working. If you are still having trouble adjusting it drop us a line and let us know, we're happy to help.

As for advice on chemo, we have a lot you can check out here in the Forums and the Tripawds news blog. If you search with specific wording like the type of chemo you're considering and "Doberman" together you'll find lots to keep you busy reading!

We didn't do chemo, but what I can tell you is that from what we've seen, the vast majority of dogs and cats dont' experience side effects. Yes, it's a gamble and there are no guarantees but if you're a strong believer in statistics, you'll be very comforted knowing that the odds of a longer remission are greater with chemo than without. Again, it's always a toss up, we never really know who will beat those odds and who won't but I can tell you that with the power of the Tripawds community behind you and Shyla, anything is pawsible!
