Hi all,
Need some advice please. Harry has had a real decline over the past few days. On Friday he was coughing all day. After he ate his dinner he immediately vomited it all up and it was almost wrapped in this white sticky mucous. It looked like it was in a bag. It was pretty distressing. He has hardly eaten since then and this morning when I took him for his swim (his favourite thing) he hardly got in the water and instead just sat in the shade.
Is this what happens when it's close to the end??? I'm not ready...but is he? How will I know? My heart hurts. I don't know what to do.
Michelle.
Michelle,
I'm so sorry to hear that Harry isn't doing well. It's so sad and scary when that happens.
My Willow lost her appetite and was very tired at the end. I didn't know she had lung mets when that started, just that something was really wrong and it turned out that it was lung mets. I think most of the dogs here do get sooo tired and stop eating. But you know Harry better than anyone.
I'm sorry you're so sad. You have very right to be sad and heartbroken. I wish there was something more I could say to make you feel better. My heart goes out to you.
Sending you love and strength.
Carol
Have you talked with your vet? I only ask because there were a couple times where we went through a similar issue--vomiting, lethargy, disinterest--and both times we thought, "Oh, this is bad..." But we treated him for ulcers/GI problems, and he rebounded.
It's really hard to say, esp. with so many compounding factors (er, and the fact that I'm not a vet :D)--I'd give your vet a call and keep them informed, at the very least. Hugs to you. I know how difficult it is.

I'm so sorry to hear this but hang in there, it could be anything and hopefully something very, very easy to treat. Be pawesitive and yes, see your vet and let us know what they say OK?
Oh and here's a post that may help:

Michelle,
So sorry you are dealing with this. We are never ready, I can tell you that with certainty. My girl died of OSA complicated with lung mets last April. Jerry has this penny/jar article that was really helpful to me. My Maggie never lost her appetite (Weims seldom do) so it was hard but she was very tired and coughing and didn't seem to enjoy her usual activities. If you have a good relationship with your vet and respect their opinion, that's where I would start. They could tell you if this is just a bump in the road. Good luck, I really feel for you, it's not easy but I'm sure you will do the best thing for Harry.

Okay Mr. Harry, let's figure out wjat's causing yor tummy to be upset, okay? Certainly pukimg AND having a yucky feeling tummy can wear a big boy like you out!
It REALLY probably is just another bump in the road and something your vet can pinpoint pretty quickky.
I know a couple of wees ago he had a "bump" and felt better, so this is probavly the same.......jist part of the ups and downs.
I know your vet eliminated any of the meds "not likely" causing any sysmptons last time, but this timeit does seem to be more gastro-related and "could" be med related......just throwing that out there.
Additionally, if he has another inner ear infection, goodness knows that could make you vomit and not feel like moving.
I KNOW this is soooooo hard, but as Megan said, many times during the 'down" part, she thought it might be the end...took it day by day...and many ti es Sam went back into the "up" part again!
For me, if I'm questioning if it's time...it isn't. Almost always, at some point, the dogs made their decsion known to me in some form or another. It was like, okay, now "X" has happened and that would sorta' be them telling me what they wanted. It wasn't always that clear and so etimes I would second guess...should I have waited...should I have done it sooner. I've just come to the conclusion that whenever you do "it"...that was what was needed for their well-being and just TRUST that to be true.
Back to magnificent Harry! Yeah, get the vet to check him out. I know you mentioned it had been hot in Brisbane in another post, so that could take a toll too when vomiting! It just sounds like he's got GI issues. Is it possible he got "into so ething"? Any kind of carcess or anything like that?
Stay in the moment, o,ay? Harry's not worried, he just loves being withyou! Even if he's tired and has an upset tummy, I bet he still likes snuggling with you.....yeah, go snuggle that big boy! You both will feel better!
O,ay, we've got all tripawd paws crossed over here and that's a lot of pawsitivity!!
Sending you love and peace and huge hugs!

Thanks so much everyone. I will check with my vet about the G.I. issues - how can they tell though? Our vet has been wonderful but last time I took Harry in to be checked I kinda got the impression that they had...I don't want to say 'given up' on him...but they kind of just tell me it's all part and parcel of the illness. Hopefully they can help figure this out though.
I managed to get him to eat some puppy food this morning and some cheese...great diet huh! But he still seems very lethargic. Will keep you posted later today.
Okay, good, he ate some puppy food! And he is just one GIANT puppy, that's for sure!
Ya' know, I think yojr "feeling" that so etimes a vet can cnvey a "given up" attitdue is correct. It's certainly t intentional, thatsf for sure- I think someti es they feel k da' helpless too with this piece of crap disease
If I recall, didn't your vet just sort of "rule out" tjat it wasn't the meds last time and didn't reallh do any tests? I could be completely wrong, butit seems like I remember thinking "but you didn't do any tests". I mean, of Harry didn't ave this particular health issue, I would thin they would do all sorts of tests to see if he sprained something,or ate something causing him to vomit, etc.
Sooooooo jere's my point.....I would either get a seo d opinion ......YAAAAAAAAY for seco d opinio s!! Or' I wold just be real clear to your regular vet that 's real important to you right now to determne if there are anyother causes. Again, a "second opinion vet" may be a good idea and more open to seeing if there are otjer issues.
Now, of course it goes wthout saying.....I'M NO VET" It just seems to me that with a dog throwing up his food with slime, lethergic and on meds that "could" cause stomach upset, would at least maybe try tapering off on some of the drigs...if not all...for a few days (if can do so safely), take temperature, bloodwork, etc. to rule out infection. Heck, he could have picked up some bacteria when he was swimming.....and certainly could have aggravated his inner ear problem if he got water in them.
How is his "attitude"? Not in pain, right? Just very tired? Is he engaged..interacting with you..tail wags...or whatever his "normal" behavior would be as far as those things go? If so eone rang the doorbell would he perk up his ears, etc (id he usualy does)?
Hang in there Michelle! See if you can get another opinion or get your regular vet to be open to the possibilities of other causes. I guess going back to your origi al question...vomiting, not eating, overall lethargice...seems like it coild be an intestinal issue to me.
As usual, sorry for my bad typing...and then add to it this tablet skips "n"..adds "M" when I hit the space bar...and no matter how many times I accurately type a "h", it types a "j" and a "," for a "k" Jist thought I'd through that little "tablet tid bit" out there to keep your mind off things
Sending you and Harry sooooooooo much love and healing energy. Post as soon as you can! We're with you.

There are many tests they can do to help you pinpoint the issue. If your vet isn't treating you the way you want to be treated, go elsewhere. If your options are limited then take Sally's advice and be a strong advocate for him. It doesn't matter WHERE he is in this disease, what matters is that you are both treated with respect, compassion and provided information that you need to make informed decisions.

So Harry had a visit to the vets this afternoon. Our vet was actually great and ran a number of tests, Harry's blood pressure was up (but came down fairly quickly so was probably due to heat in Brisbane at the mo), but his ears are clear (yay) and his blood work all came back fine. So he suspects a stomach issue. He's prescribed Odansetron to help with any nausea and recommends we stop the metacam for a few days and see if Harry seems better. Then we can go from there. Judging by the fact Harry still seems like his old self in many ways (still barks when someone comes on the property, still wants to go out whenever I go to the car, still gets up tail wagging to say hello etc) we are all hoping it is just something fixable like a stomach issue. Thanks so much again for the advice. Will post again in a few days and update.
xx
Aww that is great news!
YES! I'll bet it's the Metacam; I forgot one of the signs of side effects is "mucousy" stools.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY HARRY
Okay, we always jave to sau we're not vets..HOWEVER...we've earned a Master's Degree from the "Uniiversity of First Hand Experience" when it comes to this journey! And kt's a University none of us wanted to attened and there were certainly no Scholarships offered either! You are a GREAT advocate for Harry and good for you for getting them to run "regular tests"! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY MOM
EVERYTHING CHECKS OUT GOOD?? That calls for another YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY HARRY
Yeah, as I mentioned in your earlier post, "cast iron stomach" Hapoy Hannah can't take meloxicam because it upsets her tummy. Cat poop? No problem!
And the fact that Harry's still so engaged and involved in life! Yes indeedy, we eed another YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY HARRY
I am soooooo happy to see this update! Now, the other chemo meds could still be causing his tummy upset too. So, that's always something to considerif his energy doesn't pick up or if his tummy still bothers him. Heck, big boy like that could easilypull or strain something and not feel like takng a swim!
OMD! We have got to have a picture of Harry swimming!! Heck, we'll settle for any pictures!!
Now go treat yourself to some ice cream and give Harry a bowl too! Smiling over here!! HUGE smile!!
Lots of love to you voth!
