So back on Feb 16, 2018 Eboni had surgery to repair Cruciate Ligament, rear leg.  Things went bad and she ended up getting the leg amputated March 1.  It's been quite the drama.  She has had issues with the cone, meant to protect the wound, causing irritation/wounds near incision.  Vet said lets take the cone off and if she licks it ok. But a day later she now has opened up the "holes" that were there where drainage was coming out.  How do you stop a dog from licking wound?  I'm at a loss.  I have tried 3 different cones/inflatable collars.  Nothing stops her from rubbing the site and causing tissue damage. The holes are deep.

First you need to get that cone of shame back on, and double up with two different types of cones if necessary. An old pair of boxers (with the tail through the flap) can also provide a little protection. But such excessive licking might indicate pain, so an adjustment in pain medication might be in order. Many members have reported success using bitter apple spray to prevent licking too.

Then please consider taking Eboni back to a different vet to make sure that incision site is taken care of ASAP, before it gets much worse.

Welcome and best wishes for Eboni! Please keep us posted, your future forum posts will not require moderation.
