Hello,

I have never posted here but was hoping for some thoughts.  I have a 7 year old male greyhound who had his right front leg removed six months ago with an osterocarsonomia diagnosis.  He recovered amazingly and was running and enjoying life a month after surgery.  His lung xrays were clear and we took the decision not to pursue further treatment or tests.

Last week there was a sudden decline in Joe.  He began losing balance.  Was running a high temp and his remaining legs became very swollen very quickly and hot to the touch.  His front leg now seems to have a similar growth to the one that was removed, along with the swelling and he's become lame. Yet he's still eating.  The vet wanted to xray his lungs and leg to see if it was cancer or something called Marie's disease -- associated with cancer.  But we feel unless there's something other than cancer or marie's disease we don't want to get into a cycle of false hope.

We are still recovering from losing another dog in august so we've been put through the ringer.  We've run out of pet insurance because of the amputation.  We don't want to put him through a bunch of further tests but still these symptoms leave me scratching my head -- the high temp, the swelling hot lets, and the speed it all happened.  We think this is not good and want to do our best for him, even if that means keeping him comfortable until we are know it is time.  But I wanted to put there out and see if anyone had thoughts or similar symptoms.

Thank you!

Hello and welcome. I'm sorry to hear your pup isn't feeling well. Joe sounds like an amazing dog.

I hadn't heard of Marie's Disese before but the symptoms were familiar, so a quick search with Dr. Google came up with hypertrophic osteopathy, which is what a few other Tripawds have had here. As you know, the primary means of diagnosing it is a simple x-ray. Treatment for this is usually palliative, so the good thing about doing the one x-ray is you will know how to keep Joe comfortable IF this is what it is.

Your vet sounds like a good one. Many don't usually consider this diagnosis until it's very late in progression. If you discuss your concerns about treatment with your vet I'm going to bet that they can come up with ways to help Joe maintain a good quality of life through pain management for as long as possible without putting you through a lot of expensive tests if it's not HO.

Joe, you cert are a well loved pup! To know you recovered from your amputation so well and, until this "bump in the road", have really been enjoying life is wonderful to hear.

I clicked onto this specific link from Jerry's links and found it offered a lot of good palliative care that made a positive difference in quality.

As Jerry said, it sounds like an xray could help pinpoint the cause. It wouldn't be giving you false hope, as much as guiding you towards a treatment plan to help Joe's quality. IF it's mets or marie's disease, some relatively inexpensive meds such as Prednisone, Tramadol and Gabapentin seem to be helpful.

It could also be some sort of autoimmune disease which Prednisone can be helpful with that too. The swelling and, especially the temperature, could definitely point that way too. Of course, I'm no vet but it's worth checking out.

I'm so very sorry that you lost one of your family members in August. I know the waves of grief still hit you like a ton of bricks. If you check out our Coping with Loss thread, there are wonderfully supportive tips, poems, etc. to help you navigate through your grief.

I know you and Joe have a very special Guardian Angel watching over you.

Please update us when you can and give that sweet boy a big smooch for us...and an extra bag of treats.

Welcome.

I'm sorry Joe is not feeling well, and I'm sorry you lost another pup in August, you are dealing with a lot right now.

Is your vet willing to prescribe pain meds for Joe without a definite diagnosis?  If he is dealing with HO or Maria's Disease it can be very painful as it affects the bones.

I wouldn't look at an x-ray providing false hope, rather a relatively cheap way to determine your path forward with Joe.  If he does have some sort of infection or something else going on at least you would know better your options.

I do understand not wanting to do more testing or aggressive treatments,  I came to that point with my tri-pug Maggie who had mast cell cancer. When she developed what seemed to be a second cancer I did have it biopsied to make sure what it was before I decided what to do.  It was a different cancer and the only way to treat it was with surgery and radiation. Because of several other issues I decided just to keep her comfortable.  I do think knowing what I was dealing with for sure helped me make that decision.

Please keep us posted on what you decided to do, and how Joe and you are feeling.

Howdy and welcome!

I'm in total agreement with the others. It's so very hard to make these kinds of decisions on the heels of losing a fur-baby in August, my deepest condolences. When one doesn't have the time to deal with grief, it can skew your outlook.

Don't grieve for Joe prematurely and remember to do what you think you'll be able to make peace with at a later time when life settles down and you'll start to question your decisions.

I know joy seems so far away at this moment, but you have to remember joy is what your August baby feels right now as the Bridge embraced that sweet soul. And however long Joe remains with you, he is never so happy than when he's in the presence of you and his pack.

Please give him a big ole smooch for me.

Peace be with you my friend,

pam
