hey

axle boy Is 6 days post amputation and doing fairly well, we had a few teething issues to start. But things are settling now. He had a check up today and had his dressing and bandage removed and his scar wound is looking great, I was actually expecting it to look way worse. The vet told me I can stop all meds?? Mainly to give axle a breather as his GI was suffering a little. Is this the norm for after surgery?? I'm worried his going to be in pain?

Meg was on tramadol and rimadyl for the first five or so days but GI issues caused us to drop the rimadyl. Around day 6 or 7 we dropped down to a 20mg tramadol tablet every 10-12 hours instead of every 6-8 hours, unless it was obvious she was in a bit of pain. At day 10 she started having it only at night, rather than morning and night, which was primarily to help her sleep or if she woke up in pain, and her last dosage of tramadol was day 12.

She was so much back to her normal self and not showing pain so much that I forgot to give it to her for a night or two, and once I realised I'd forgotten, it seemed very evident that for the last few days the tramadol was just sedating her and making her act funny.

Basically, its trial and error, you can try easing off after the first week but I've seen that it's too early for a lot of dogs, some dogs stay on the pain meds until day 20 or even later. You know your dog better than anyone, if he seems ok and pain free with the current dosages, slowly lower them or stretch out the time between dosages and if he copes continue lowering and strenching the time out for the next week.

*oh, I hit post too early! I'm super thrilled that Axle and yourself are doing great, I hope his sparkle is coming back!!

Most dogs stay on their pain meds for about 2 - 3 weeks.  Murphy weaned down during the 2nd week and was pretty much done by the end of that week.  Of course, each dog is different in how they are handling their pain.

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

Yeah, 10 days is about the norm, but all dogs are different. Your vet didn't ask you to gradually withdraw meds?

We stayed on everything for 10 days, when the staples came out.  Then we were told to wean off the Tramadol, by eliminating the midday dose, then the morning dose.  Eventually, we got down to just one pill before bed, and it think we were off it by the end of week 3.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

No our vet told me to stop all meds and to start if needed. The thing is axle has 100mg tramadol, which I feel is quite a big dose in one tablet, I wish they would have perscribed 50 mg so I could lower his dose and add more if needed.he hasn't had any pain relief since yesterday morning and seems to be doing great. I guess I'll just have to see how he goes

Are you able to cut the tablets in half and give him a 50mg dose? Hope he is doing well!
