Hi-  It's been just short of a month since Mabey's surgery.  I posted last week that she was doing great.  Playing with her sister and getting around like her old self.   She did stumble on her back legs getting into the car but then seemed fine. Last night she really got lethargic and wouldn't eat.  I gave her a Tramadol last night.  This morning she ate her breakfast and I gave her another Tramadol but she is back to just laying around.  I'm assuming she has just over done it and is sore.  Of course it's Sunday so I can't call my regular vet and the only option is the emergency vet but they don't know her history.   Since she is eating today and comfortable-  just resting I think I'm okay to wait until tomorrow.  I don't feel any swelling on her back legs nor does she seem to be favoring them.  I have to keep reminding myself that she has been thorough a major change but when she acts like her old self it's easy to forget.  I'm assuming others have had a similar experience.  Any advice?

Thanks

Shelly and Mabey

Aww poor thing. Sounds to me she just over-did it. There are many ups and downs to her recovery. I get sore bowling, I can't imagine having to learn how to walk.

Stay cool and calm.

You're doing great!

Pam

Thanks Pam!  I hear you. I get sore just getting out of bed most days :)  Ironically as I was sitting at my desk writing the post she came up to me and asked to go outside.  Navigated the front step in and out no problem.  Just need to make sure she is getting plenty of rest.

Yeah, may just be a little too much too soon. And always in a week edn or holiday!!! Since she's eating and drinkingnthough, I wouldn't worry but it is a good idea to take her in Monday. Could be so many little things......a misstep that pulled a muscle, tweaked her back, or her neck, etc. That can definitely make them feel like they don't want to move.

Vets now say it takes "about" two weeks to recover from the surgery, and "about" one month to work out mobility issues, muscle adjustments, etc.

Let us know what the vet says, okay? Keep spoiling and loving her like you do so beautifully and, for you, get the chocolate out again!!!

My pug Maggie was a rear amp, and it took her 6 months to work up to half the activity level she could handle before the surgery.

Of course one of pug's favorite activities is napping- she aced that right away big-grin.

It's also pretty easy for a Tripawd, especially a new Tripawd, to tweak something while they are getting used to their new gate and still building muscle.

Glad to hear that she is already on the mend!

Tanner is a rear amp from injury and a little different for us (since my Jake was a front amp battling cancer) but I think Tanner recovered in a foster home for 6 months before he was put up for adoption. It seems 6 months is a pretty standard recovery time for the injury amps. I can only imagine there are a lot of ups and down's in there because Mabey probably felt great and thought she could go back to playing like normal and since she's only a few weeks out she just over did it. Poor thing. She probably wants to get back to being her old self asap! Hang tight sweet girl and take it easy, you'll be back to running and playing in no time :)

Greetings Mama and Mabey. Molly J is a rear amp too. The first several weeks were a roller coaster. I seem to remember that as she weaned off all those meds, there were some moments when I wondered if she still needed the full dosage, and each day was different. But as long as your pup is eating, drinking, asking to go out, etc..., just take it easy. It sounds like she's on the "normal" road to recovery.

Thanks all for your great advice.  Yesterday she mostly rested but was eating and doing everything normally.  I am happy to report she has all her energy back and was just playing tug with her sister :)  We are going to have to manage through the ups and downs and all this support is helping so much!!

Heyyyyy glad to hear she's better. It's super tricky at first trying to manage a new Tripawd's activity levels to ensure they don't overdo things (especially when there's another dog in the house) but you're getting there. Just keep an eye on her to make sure that she still gets plenty of R&R between play and walking sessions. We always make Wyatt Ray take mandatory breaks when he's playing hard or getting extra activity.

A new Tripawd needs much more time (and strengthening and conditioning sessions) to adjust to activity than they let on, they're good at faking it!
