Yesterday at 6 pm, we arrived home from work. We let the dogs out as usual - fenced back yard off the kitchen. I was making their dinner and I noticed Eider wasn't at the door like he always is when food is involved. He was standing out in the yard like he was urinating but nothing was coming out. I got him inside, thinking it was a fluke. Then on our walk, he CONSTANTLY pulled to try to stop and pee. A little bit would come out. Since then, he has been on a constant quest to pee. He leaked on our bed, his bed etc. We have not slept and my husband sat on the porch with him all night. Eider's penis and "bulbus glandis" are super swollen at this point. He isn't crying, but he is definitely uncomfortable. He wags tail, very alert, and still pretty agile, given that he stood up ALL NIGHT on 3 legs, 3 weeks post amp. I even gave him a Trazedone to try to sedate him and he still stood. So stubborn. I will be taking him to see our local vet this morning when they open. I don't know what is going on, but it it isn't good. I emailed the specialists at Auburn to make them aware. This happened at 7 days post-amp, which is when we took him right back in. Suspected UTI, but cultures were negative and it "resolved". This time it is much different. Way worse. I FINALLY got him to come inside just now and he is sprawled out on the living room floor. There is no discharge, no blood or puss. Less than an hour till vet opens. We were supposed to take him in today anyways for post-chemo CBC and suture removal. So, I supposed they will proceed with all of that. This has been our longest night so far. My poor hubs has training at work today, so he couldn't miss. We commute an hour for our jobs. I charged him up with caffeine and a low carb breakfast. Needless to say, I am in a panic and I just needed to spell it out. Thanks, Lauren
Lauren, as you can already see, we're all right here for you. I know this is so unnerving. You are doing exactly what needs to be done...getting him j nto the vet asasp! It may be that the uti never cleared up. That makes sense. If it's some sort of prostate issue, a good dose of anti-inflammatory could clearm that up.
We'll be looking for your update.
lots of hugs!

OH my gosh how scary. Hopefully it's nothing serious (usually it isnt, really!). Let us know what the vet says, we're thinking of you.

Okay, skipped the local vet and went straight to AU. Â Vets met me in the hallway and acknowledged the swelling and then witnessed the effort to pee. Â Ultrasound and Urethrogram (sic) and the conclusion is some post-op, neurologically based spasms. Â It was a LONG day. Â But, his CBC was great, no infections and sutures are finally gone. Â
Dr. Matz is so awesome. Â He is always like "I hate to have you drive down here, etc etc" and I'm always like, "UMMMM, as long as I leave with my sweet boy, it is worth it!"
So, he consulted with several other vets and we are going to try a drug called Prazosin for his urethra situation. Â We will know in 2-3 days if he tolerates it (not all dogs do) and then re-evaulate in 2 weeks. Â
So, ultimately, it is a big deal, but it's hopefully something that can be addressed without further surgery. I tend to be a hippie about meds, but at this point, I'm like "BRING ON THE DRUGS! Â LET'S BATHE IN CHEMO!" Â
We are back home. Â I'm making dinner and the dogs and hubs are chilling' on the front porch. Â
Also, I met a front leg amp today named Lucy. Â She was amazing! Â I told her about this group. Â Hopefully she will join!Â
Thanks everyone!Â
Totally hoping this med works! Â I would have been panic stricken. Â Poor boy.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.  Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma. Â

Hope all meds work for him. That is very scary. I first thought UTI but with the swelling that wouldn't have been

Whew! Glad they were able to figure it out. That's pretty rare, I can't really recall it happening to another member (lucky you eh?), so thanks for sharing the info and the meds. Hopefully no more surgery!
Enjoy the evening together. You done good 🙂
And thanks for spreading the word about this community, it's greatly appreciated. Hugs to all of you!

This is just craaaaazy!! I was wondering if Jerry had heard of this happening before. So, leave it to Eider to be the first!!
So this is something "rare" that was, or was not, related to the sjrgery? Lr just a fluke that has nothing to do with anything?
Guess they relieved his bladder somehow?
Don't mean ro be asking so many questions. This site sure is a source of information for all sorts of "rarities", that's for sure!
Glad you got some answers and some good meds ro help turn this around.
TRY a d get some much needed rest. You are an outstanding advocate!
Love and hugs!
