This question pops up a lot here at Tripawds and nopawdy can answer it better than our hero, Dr. Sue Ettinger, a veterinary oncologist in New York and co-author of The Dog Cancer Survival Guide.

Here’s a touchy subject for us to look at: why can’t my regular veterinarian give my dog chemotherapy? Do I really need to see a specialist?

I am often asked these questions by clients, and my answer is always the same:  no.

I understand her point.  In my case and many others we have no Oncologists in our area.  For me it would have been a 4 hour drive to K-state or 2 hour drive to Ames Iowa-State (where I knew no vets although a teaching hospital) or 8 hours to CO State.  We consulted with the Oncologists at K-state and all my vets have done chemo at the clinic.  I just couldn't do the cost of driving on top of the Chemo.  I am glad I had Dr Boyer give the chemo as it gave Sassy the best chance she had.

Now with that being said if we had an Oncologist in our area, I probably would have them do it because they specialize and my vets have no problems with referring to specialists.  I just feel you have to do what you have to do with the resources that you have.

Excellent point too Michelle. That's true. There are must some times where logistics/distance make it impossible for an actual Onco. to do the treatment.

When you have a situation like you had, as well as the experience that your amazing Dr. Boyer had, those are exceptions that I'm sure Dr. Ettinger would support.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

You are absolutely right Michelle, in fact that is the #1 reason why we opted out of chemo for Jerry. Even if they had consulted with an out of town oncologist, not a single vet in our area had the experience to allow us to feel comfortable having him do it.

So yeah, not every9one's in New York like Dr. Sue. There are no right or wrong decisions.

Just throwing in my 2 cents....I was extremely comfortable letting my regular vet do the chemo - both times we've faced it. About 18 years ago my first Dobe, Thor, got lymphoma; my vet did the chemo, he went into remission, and lived 2 more years. Fast-forward to today, the same vet did Nitro's chemo. I could've chosed the onco where he had his surgery, but her attitude turned me off. There was no relationship, no personal investment with her. Our regular vet was more than competent, and if she had questions she consulted the vet school at UW Wisconsin. For me, having someone who truly knew and cared about my dog (and me) was more important than having an "expert".

Paula and Nitro

Nitro 11 1/2  yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms.  Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

Oh had I not felt comfortable with Dr Boyer or any of my vets I would have figured out a way to do the traveling.  But I trust my vets and love them to death.  I get what you are saying Paula.  🙂

I don't think we will ever get that kind of specialist in this area.

You never know Michelle, your town is pretty darn neat! I think it's only a matter of time before it takes off, it really seems like a nice place to live.
