Hello Good People,

Like many on this forum, we have been on a long journey. Luna has had her first chemo treatment today.  I was just wondering what others have experienced as far as side-effects and behaviour changes.

Additionally, I am looking for any nutrition or supplement tips anyone may have.  I have read Charley's Protocol and will look further into this on this forum... just wondering if anyone could direct me to some particularly helpful links.

We are in the UK, so availability of some products may be different for us.  Thank you in advance to all the very helpful people out there who are very familiar with this this tough road already.

2 May 2013: Luna is diagnosed with bone cancer of the right scapula/shoulder blade.
14 May 2013: Amputation of the right foreleg.
30 May 2013: Diagnosis of osteosarcoma; we were hoping for a diagnosis of chondrosarcoma, a less aggressive cancer.
5 June 2013: First of three chemotherapy treatments with carboplatin.

Welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not require moderation.

I'm guessing from your post that Luna has OSA, what chemo drugs is she getting? Is she a front or rear amp?

Our Nutrition Blog has lots of info and ideas on diets and supplements.

My little pug Maggie had mast cell cancer so her regimen was a bit different.  She did chemo for 6 months, a total of 14 treatments with two different drugs.  She had some fatigue and once or twice a bit of nausea, but the meds took care of that.  Once her WBC count was too low and we had to postpone treatment.  Overall though I was very happy with how she handled the chemo.  I think most people here will tell you there were little or no side effects.

Good luck with treatment and let us know how Luna is doing.

Welcome Luna and family-

Shooter also has mast cell cancer. So far he has received treatments with vinblastine along with prednisone and lumostine/CCNU along with prednisone. He had no side effects from the vinblastine, but the lumostine has kicked his butt! No nausea, but really his WBC and RBC so a week after his first dosage he ended up with anemia and an infection. Once he got on antibiotic, he recovered quite well. The pred also makes him very thirsty so he drinks a lot of water and it also causes him to pant more than normal. My vet is going to lower his next dose of the chemo.

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

Thanks for the links and directions, all.  I included some of the background information in a signature, but it seems I'm having technical difficulties and can't get the signature to save properly. aw-shucks

Luna has osteosarcoma. She is getting carboplatin.  Here is what I have tried to save as my signature:

2 May 2013: Luna is diagnosed with bone cancer of the right scapula/shoulder blade.  14 May 2013: Amputation of the right foreleg.  30 May 2013: Diagnosis of osteosarcoma; we were hoping for a diagnosis of chondrosarcoma, a less aggressive cancer.  5 June 2013: First of three chemotherapy treatments.

So far she has done alright.  She cried for quite a long time last night, but I think that was a side affect of the sedative they had to use so they could administer the chemo.  I don't need to tell you all how worried I have been. crying

She is a very brave little thing; we would never have guessed she was as ill as she is.  We love her to bits.

It looks like I have a lot of reading to do.  Thanks so much for the help!  smiley

Hi Lunar...Sorry I missed your first post. She is an adorable girl....wonderful photo!

Sounds like you have a good plan in place for Luna.

She still is early on in recovery...three weeks out from a major surgery can still be a little rough. I had to keep Halt Hannah on some form of pain meds well into three weeks. Just wondering if she was having a little touch of pain or if it was sedation related?

Also must curious, your cutie pie has to be sedated for chemo? Pretty frisky girl at the vet's is she?

This is such a tough journey but you are on the UP side now and you will really start to see the sparkle back more and. Ore consistently!! It actually seemed as though Happy Hannah started feeling better once she got her chemo!! Strange but true!!
Take care of yourself and conti UE the gift of living in the moment with your Lu a! She's. Of worried about a thing and is just thrilled to be love and spoiled and getting g to s of treats! You are strong and so is Lu a! Good job to you both!!

Look forward to. more pictures and celebration g. Ore victories!!

Go hug her right. Ow for us and give yourself a IG hug too! No! A really big one!! Yeah, such better:-) :-)

Hugs to you, Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

My, a sedative?  Hmmm.  That's new to me.

We all seem to do different things here for nutrition and supplements.  I got Dr D's book and am doing many things in there as well as some others.  Jackson gets ~1800mg EPA fish oil a day, MUSH (Only Natural Pet) with dinner, BSST (Only Natural Pet) with bfast and dinner, a Hip and Joint Plus (Pet Naturals of Vermont) with bfast (this is for hip and joint protection, but the MSM in there is great for dogs on cytoxan), and metronmic therapy (cytoxan and rimadyl).  We were allowed to use all these products during chemo and maybe it was these plus the antibiotics they gave him after each of his 5 doses, but Jackson did GREAT during chemo.  No side effects and his WBC never got low enough to postpone anything.

Good luck over there!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Luna is a worrier.  She's very friendly and I don't think she would ever act in a threatening way to anyone, but she gets very worried in new situations, and now, I imagine, worried at the vets, since she's been through so many unpleasant procedures in so little time.  Vets and vet nurses tend to love her because she's a brave and easy dog.  Her worry tends to manifest itself not only in the usual hefty panting, but she also turns into a wiggle-worm.  I imagine the chemo nurse couldn't get her to hold still and so had to sedate her a bit.  I saw it coming, actually.  crying  Most of the time she's a really calm, steady dog; a couch potato, really. Two days after chemo now and she seems to be doing just fine.  The crying and wimpering was limited to that one night.  I don't know what sedative and reverser they used, but I am going to find out because she has had this sad side effect from it twice now - the other time was after her X-Ray.  I wonder if she acted that way after her op as well but I just never saw it, since she was in the animal hospital. The duty vet said Luna never settled and was very nervous in the hospital. It ripped my heart out.

I'd rather Luna not go back on Rimadyl.  She had that for her post-op pain meds.  She reminded me of a bed-bound, clinically depressed junkie. Nightmare.  Naturally, I didn't expect her to be her old self just after major surgery, but while she was on the full dose of Rimadyl, I couldn't see through her fog to any of the dog I knew and loved.  Once the dose was halved (she's off of it completely now) she returned to her usual happy self.

Luna is relatively stoic and has a high pain threshold... all down to her breed type, I think. We would have *never* guessed she was as ill as she was.  The vets missed the cancer for a long time too.  I just hope that we didn't catch it too late for her to enjoy life for some time to come.  The surgeon/specialist said that it had not spread to her lungs as of amputation day.  He showed us the CT scan and explained it, but I'm not trained to understand the scans, so I just had to trust him. We got the usual (from what I've read so far) prognosis: four months without chemo, up to one year with the chemo. It makes my heart glad to see other dogs have lived longer, but I'll take each day as it comes and love my dog as long as I am lucky enough to have her with me.

A word about supplements.  I have read that large doses of fish oil has the potential to cause a vitamin E deficiency (which can be painful and fatal) in dogs. Does anyone have any experience with this?  Luna was getting a glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM/omega 3 supplement but I stopped it because I didn't know how it might affect her with the Rimadyl.  I will probably start her on it again.  She has been eating a good quality dog food (complete dry mixed with wet tray 2x day) for a long time now. The food (Wainwright's for those in the UK) has no colourants, preservatives, derivatives or wheat.  The wet has little filler and is at least 70% meat.  Occasionally she gets fish skins from our own dinner and raw chicken necks and giblets.  She does love her food! laughing

Thanks again for all the links and suggestions!  Soooo much appreciated! smiley

It's great that you keep such a close eye on Luna's behavior and how the meds are affecting it. And, you are a great advocate for her at the vet's clinic too. You are just as strong as she is, you are both doing great! Taking things one day at a time is a great approach.

When it comes to administering chemo, I'm not entirely surprised that some dogs would need a sedative. I know our Wyatt Ray would be an anxious wreck in that situation. But it's good to ask the vet what your other options are.

As for large doses of fish oil, Dr. Dressler warns of blood thinning effects but does not warn of Vitamin E deficiency when given at recommended doses. As with any supplement, mega-doses can have counter productive effects so be sure to consult this Tripawds Nutrition post for proper dosages.
