As of late, Tucson has been hit by some very rough things. Ya, of course there's the typical drug problems and murder problems but there is now a new problem; something that we now call the Dog Patch. You may think it sounds nice but it's quite the opposite. The Dog Patch is an area south of town that has been known to be a dumping area. We have just recently found out that this area is actually a dump site for more than just trash. It is a dump site for unwanted animals, dead and alive. I found out about this horrible problem when I was looking at the local Pet section on Craigslist. Someone had posted something about it with gruesome pictures of a horse carcass. My rescue agency that I work with had joined in and was asking for volunteers. I volunteered to help find live dogs out in the patch. On Sunday my partner and I went out in search along with a group of 5 other people. The lady who was with us had been out there very day since the past Monday in search of live animals. So far they had helped save 3 dogs and a horse. When we got out there, we came upon 4 dogs, three pug mixes and one rat terrier. The female pug and the female terrier were both pregnant. We managed to catch them and the lady in charge told us that these four must have been dropped off within the past 24 hour as they had not been spotted before. By this time we had come upon countless animals, at least 5 dead horses, 1 dead calf, 1 goat, and countless dogs. There were dead dogs every 50 or so yards. The stench was unbearable.
You might be wondering why I felt the need to share this with the Tripawd community. First because I know that all of you are dog lovers and you would all be able to relate to how I feel when it comes to not understanding how someone could be so cruel as to drop off dogs to let them starve to death in the desert. Secondly because there was a relevant part of the story that related to tripawds. There was a dog that was found that had four legs but was only able to use the front two. He was captured last Saturday and taken in. He had been found using his front two legs while dragging his hind legs and his butt on the ground. The poor guy was terribly emaciated and looked horrible. Unfortunately after a day the young guy had to be put down as he was attacking all the other dogs and humans that were near him. While it is a horrible story, I just want to thank all of you for what you do. This poor dog was most likely dropped out in the Dog Patch because of the fact that his back two legs had stopped working. If it had been you guys, you would have taken better care of this dog and not let him die. I hope that whoever is doing these horrible things dies a terrible death.

This just breaks my heart. How can people be so cruel?
I'd give anything to be able to own a piece of land where I could just take in unwanted dogs and let them live out their days in a healthy pack.

It's nice to know that you guys do understand. It's been a very trying time. We have a lot of rescues getting involved and it's made the news here in town. We're trying to make it reach national news so we can raise the money to clean up this dump site. Here is a link to one of the news pieces done. It even includes a split moment where you can see the two legged dog.

Dear Dog, I am crying and sick with disgust, especially with the comment that the Sheriff Department "found no evidence of animal cruelty." WTF???

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I looked up the Heart of Tucson rescue group, but if you know of others who are helping out, please post links to them OK?

Ya, I hate that the Sheriffs claim there is no abuse going on. Trust me, when you go out there, there is tons of proof. The other thing that bothers me a lot is the smell of the animals and the fact that these neighbors are letting their kids play out in this area. It's completely unsafe.

I have quite a few links for you guys if you feel the need to help out or just do some research:

Dog Patch Facebook Group

Tucson Cold Wet Noses – A Foster Group I'm With

People Assisting Kindred Spirits – These guys have most of the rescued dogs in their foster homes

Also, the Heart rescue is solely for Horses just so you know, but they were the ones who saved the mare that was out there.

I am a huge part of this and I work with all of these fosters and I am an admin on the Facebook group so if you don't know how to contact someone and would like to, let me know and I'll help you out.

I can't believe that this is actually going on at this dump site in Tuscan, AZ. There are honest, loving people losing their precious pets to a horrible disease (painful and aggressive "bone cancer") and what did their pets do to get this disease…nothing? Their pets are innocent. And yet there are hateful people out there who are so http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v148/PaBabyBlue/BMPCensored.bmp
cruel to innocent pets, and just throw them in the trash, and a dumpster. Why? What did they do? Nothing? They are innocent and can't speak for themselves. The people who are doing this, once they are caught, there really is not enough that can be done to punish them….. that's just my opinion. That film clip is really disturbing ' class='wp-smiley' /> ' class='wp-smiley' /> ' class='wp-smiley' /> ' class='wp-smiley' />

God Bless you for stepping in and helping these defenseless animals from these cruel and inhuman people. I will be praying that the colprits are caught very soon and that the cruelty is stopped.

Forgive me if I don't read your post or watch the video.  I just can't hear about cruelty.

I wished I was there to help.  Thank you for your devotion and compassion!

Jackie, thank you so much. I'm going to be posting this on my Facebook page and we will follow it closely. We'll tryto help any way we can.

As I said in my Facebook post, I believe there is some kind of hell waiting for the kind of people who do these things.

Thank you all for the support. I know it is very disturbing and that is exactly why we are working to stop this horror. I agree with Jerry, there has to be some sort of hell for animal killers and abusers!

I have been updated on what has happened at the dog patch today. There were no new dead animals found (the old ones had been tagged) and there were also no new live animals either! The best part is that the rescuers went out and talked to the neighbors who all talked about how they had rescued these dropped off animals; some had up to 12 dogs! These neighbors were so grateful for what we are doing that some of the men even started crying. It is truly a blessing knowing that we are making a difference and bringing some good out of a horrible situation. Also, some local official went out and visited the site today. I'm not sure who it was exactly, I'm assuming the pound and some others, but it is a start!
