Background: Wyatt is a 6 month old german shepherd dog from Oakland,CA. He just became a tripawd on July 2. Wyatt apparently had a rope wrapped around his right hind leg for some unknown period of time—the leg could not be saved. His owners said they did not want a three-legged shepherd and told the vet to euthanize Wyatt. A very kind vet tech said no way, took Wyatt home with her, and called German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California for help. The short story is that GSRNC paid for Wyatt’s amputation and we are bringing Wyatt Ray into our program. He is healing rapidly (his staples come out next week) and has adapted to life on three legs so quickly that he will be available for adoption very soon.

About Wyatt: Wyatt is a beautiful boy! He is also very sweet and loves all people and dogs that he has met so far. He is currently living in Oakland with the vet tech who rescued him and two other GSDs and loves to play. He was obviously not abused, just horribly neglected. He is a little skinny but already weighs over 60 pounds at 6 months so he is going to be a big boy. After just a couple of days post-amp his foster mom said he was already hopping around like a pro. His foster mom would like him to go to a home with another dog and says he is a typical young GSD boydog—full of energy and perhaps, a little full of himself. He will need a firm hand and someone with GSD experience to help him be all that he can be.

How did he get his name?? Wyatt’s original name was Chopper and his foster mom thought that was a horribly unfortunate name for an amputee so renamed him Wyatt. We loved the name but each GSRNC dog must have a unique name and we already had a Wyatt in our program. So, after much deliberation, we added ‘Ray’ to Wyatt’s name in honor of Codie Rae, tripawd GSD  girldog extraordinaire (and former GSRNC rescue dog). The Hottie (hotline volunteer) who answered the call about Wyatt remembered CR and didn’t hesitate to say “Sure we can help!” And we added ‘Dawg’ to Wyatt’s name in memory of the late, great, Jerry G. Dawg, who we know is watching over all tripawd pups, and in honor of Jim and Rene, who created the space for this amazing tripawd community to grow. This community is helping to save tripawd lives in so many ways…and you can count Codie Rae, Murphy 2, and now Wyatt among the tripawd pups that might not have had a second chance were it not for you and GSRNC.

So, that’s a lot of name for a 6 month old pup to live up to. But by all indicators Wyatt Ray Dawg is going to be one amazing dog and will make someone one heck of a tripawd GSD boydog companion! Stay tuned….. we will continue to post more information about Wyatt as we get to know him better.

How can I meet him??  If you might be interested in adopting Wyatt please go to our website http://www.gsrnc.org to learn more about our adoption process. If you have any questions feel free to contact me on this forum. Wyatt will be at our upcoming adoption day at the Pet Food Express in Danville, CA on Saturday the 18th …. so come down to meet him if you live in the area! See our web page for directions……

What an honor. We hope Wyatt Ray Dawg finds a home soon because we won't be passing through CA until the holidays! 😉

Three legged Shepherd adooption

OMG what a handsome, handsome boy!

I don't know what my Dad was thinking, but we are going to SF in August to get our stuff from storage in Eureka. Boy, it's really tempting to go meet him, but unfortunately I noticed that the website says “to adopt a dog from us you must live in Northern California.” Sad

Thanks for all the awesome work you do Codie Rae and Martha, we know he will find a fantastic home!
