Background: Wyatt is a 6 month old german shepherd dog from Oakland,CA. He just became a tripawd on July 2. Wyatt apparently had a rope wrapped around his right hind leg for some unknown period of time—the leg could not be saved. His owners said they did not want a three-legged shepherd and told the vet to euthanize Wyatt. A very kind vet tech said no way, took Wyatt home with her, and called German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California for help. The short story is that GSRNC paid for Wyatt’s amputation and we are bringing Wyatt Ray into our program. He is healing rapidly (his staples come out next week) and has adapted to life on three legs so quickly that he will be available for adoption very soon.

About Wyatt: Wyatt is a beautiful boy! He is also very sweet and loves all people and dogs that he has met so far. He is currently living in Oakland with the vet tech who rescued him and two other GSDs and loves to play. He was obviously not abused, just horribly neglected. He is a little skinny but already weighs over 60 pounds at 6 months so he is going to be a big boy. After just a couple of days post-amp his foster mom said he was already hopping around like a pro. His foster mom would like him to go to a home with another dog and says he is a typical young GSD boydog—full of energy and perhaps, a little full of himself. He will need a firm hand and someone with GSD experience to help him be all that he can be.

How did he get his name?? Wyatt’s original name was Chopper and his foster mom thought that was a horribly unfortunate name for an amputee so renamed him Wyatt. We loved the name but each GSRNC dog must have a unique name and we already had a Wyatt in our program. So, after much deliberation, we added ‘Ray’ to Wyatt’s name in honor of Codie Rae, tripawd GSD  girldog extraordinaire (and former GSRNC rescue dog). The Hottie (hotline volunteer) who answered the call about Wyatt remembered CR and didn’t hesitate to say “Sure we can help!” And we added ‘Dawg’ to Wyatt’s name in memory of the late, great, Jerry G. Dawg, who we know is watching over all tripawd pups, and in honor of Jim and Rene, who created the space for this amazing tripawd community to grow. This community is helping to save tripawd lives in so many ways…and you can count Codie Rae, Murphy 2, and now Wyatt among the tripawd pups that might not have had a second chance were it not for you and GSRNC.

So, that’s a lot of name for a 6 month old pup to live up to. But by all indicators Wyatt Ray Dawg is going to be one amazing dog and will make someone one heck of a tripawd GSD boydog companion! Stay tuned….. we will continue to post more information about Wyatt as we get to know him better.

How can I meet him??  If you might be interested in adopting Wyatt please go to our website http://www.gsrnc.org to learn more about our adoption process. If you have any questions feel free to contact me on this forum. Wyatt will be at our upcoming adoption day at the Pet Food Express in Danville, CA on Saturday the 18th …. so come down to meet him if you live in the area! See our web page for directions……

What an honor. We hope Wyatt Ray Dawg finds a home soon because we won't be passing through CA until the holidays! 😉

Three legged Shepherd adooption

OMG what a handsome, handsome boy!

I don't know what my Dad was thinking, but we are going to SF in August to get our stuff from storage in Eureka. Boy, it's really tempting to go meet him, but unfortunately I noticed that the website says “to adopt a dog from us you must live in Northern California.” Sad

Thanks for all the awesome work you do Codie Rae and Martha, we know he will find a fantastic home!

Hey Rene and Jim,

Thanks so much for grabbing those photos from GSRNC.com. I have photos on shutterfly but can't figure out how to get them over here! Ralph has met Wyatt  briefly and we will both get to spend some time with him this weekend (I can't wait to meet him) as we will be 'in charge' of him on Saturday at the adoption day. We are looking forward to getting to know Wyatt R. Dawg a little better and will let you know what we find out!

Martha,

Oh gosh it's so easy to grab the photos. Just right click (or CTRL click if you're on a Mac) on the photo itself, and select "Get Image Location." Then go back to your post, place your cursor where you want the photo, and select the Image Icon in your toolbar. Then, paste the URL into the pop up box that opens up. There's more information about adding photos to your post in our Tech Support Forum.

Have fun on Saturday, be sure to take lots of photos! Let us know how it goes. I'm telling ya, we are soooooo tempted to come on by and scoop him up! What a handsome boy.

PS: I think Chopper is a great name for a tripawd. But then, I also believe laughter is the best therapy.

OK, I am practicing the photo thing. Here is the photo our GSRNC Hottie thought of when he remembered Codie Rae during the hotline call about Wyatt.

Woohoo!! It worked!!

BTW Jim...awesome apron! Yeah, I forget to laugh, too often.

Sleep tight,

Martha

Here's the humorous tripawd topic that inspired the bbq apron. Tika and her people know how to remind us to laugh!

So we took Wyatt to the adoption day today. He was such a good boy! He is shy and a little slow to warm up to you (you would be too if you had spent your life in somebody's backyard) but he was friendly with everyone. He was pretty subdued as he was definitely overwhelmed by the strange surroundings and so much activity, but he handled it all really well. His foster mom says that he really opens up when he feels comfortable and that he is a really goofy boy and loves playing with his foster brother non-stop. One reason he may have been so quiet today is that he had a big playdate with 6 other GSDs yesterday! He was so tired today he just passed out on the lineup and took a big long nap with all the hooha going on around him. I think that says something important about his basic temperament.  Wyatt is really a fabulous dog and all he needs is a loving home to recuperate in, good nutrition, careful exercise to build up his strength, a firm hand and obedience training, and did I mention love?  I will tease you all with one photo here but Wyatt now has his own webpage so go check it out!
