I just wrote a huge post with photos and everything and it is gone. I left the screen idle for about 30 minutes and when I came back it had returned to the main screen. That is about 2 and a half hours of work gone if drafts are not saved.

Sorry to telly ya, but there are no forum post drafts. WordPress only auto-saves drafts for blog posts, not forum posts. With nearly 90,000 forum posts to date, and an already monstrous database, saving drafts for every forum post would just be impossible.
It may be too late this time, but we highly recommend users do not leave their forum post editor open for extended periods of time. After fifteen minutes of inactivity a user's connection is reset to keep server connectivity at a minimum.
In other words, we apologize for the inconvenience.
