Just found out my 11 year old  St. Bernard has bone cancer in his shoulder 🙁  Most people I talk to say he is too old for amputation!  He is my sweet baby and had to just let it end here.  Anyone have any encouragement?

Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining, your future posts won't require amputation. I'm so sorry about the diagnosis, it's not easy but we'll do our best to help you through this ruff patch.

I know you're in the chat room talking with Admin Guy and am so glad you are! In the meantime I can definitely tell you that 11 isn't the oldest dog we've had here. When it comes down to it, age is just a number. As long as your pup is otherwise healthy and without many physical issues, there's no reason why he can't do well on three. Who are these people telling you he won't? Are they vets? If not, ignore them! They mean well but don't know your dog as well as you do.

Now, what does your vet think? Many vets will instantly dismiss a giant breed dog, and and older one, as a candidate for amputation surgery. If your vet is telling you "no" but your heart is telling you "yes" then it really pays to get a second, or even a third opinion before deciding.

What's your pup's name? What does he weigh? Tell us all about him!
