Hi all, I've been stressing since last week about the decision I made to amputate, I know it's for the best for Zorion. Found this website, and all the support that I've read in other people's cases is just amazing. I thought I'd share my story, which is still in the making.

My 8 month old Kelpie pup dislocated his right hip just over a month ago - and did it badly. The femur could be easily popped back into the hip, but there was also a fragment of the femur head that had broken off in the fall - so it didn't stay in place. The vet also told me it was a strange way for it to be dislocated - instead of a normal dislocation, in which the bone pops out and up, tearing the ligament that holds the femur in place, Zorion's popped out and down, ending up under his pelvis, and the ligament was intact.

2 days after the accident, Zorion had an FHO to try and fix it. 5 weeks after the operation, and 4 weeks of swimming and physiotherapy, he still isn't putting weight on that leg, he hates me touching it for his physio, and he refuses to put the foot on the ground. Last week, while out on the front verandah eating dinner, he did something to himself - whether he fell over or tripped or tried to sit on the sore leg, I don't know. He was crying and shaking for about 10 minutes afterward, I brought him inside and sat on the floor with him curled up in my lap shaking, and tried to figure out what he had done. His 'bad' leg was tucked right up and he nearly snapped at me when I tried to stretch it out to see if he had hurt it - which he obviously had. Called my friend the vet and told her that he had done something, can I bring him in, in the morning, as he had settled a bit by then. Took him in, had some X-rays done, it didn't look good. Instead of the smooth edge of the femur that was expected after the FHO, it was jagged, and could be pinching a nerve with the way it was moving. My options - either another operation to try and fix it again by taking more of the end of the femur off; amputation; or painkillers for the rest of his life. My choice? Amputation.

Dropped him off at the vet this morning for the amputation, worried all day... I stopped in at 5pm to check - they had just started prepping him. I peeked in (I used to work there so I'm allowed in more than other clients) and there was my baby boy, lying on the table under anaesthetic and all shaved again. I had to go - I didn't want to watch it being done to my boy. Other people's animals, I can deal with those surgeries, but my own? No thanks.

Got the call at 7pm, operation is just finished, hes still sleeping but should be waking up shortly, operation went well, leg has been amputated mid femur like normal - I got told they might have to amputate at the hip because of the previous FHO, but apparently it was fine to still do it mid-femur.

I'm stopping in before work in the morning to see him, make sure he's fine, then picking him up after work tomorrow.

I know he won't have a big adjustment period to learn how to walk on 3 legs because he's been walking on 3 legs since the dislocation.

Will post some photos when I get him safely home,

Hi Amy,

I'm so sorry to hear everything that poor Zorion has been going through. But now that he's had his amputation... that painful leg is gone and once he heals from the surgery, he should be much better than he was before all this happened to him!

Be prepared for the 1st 2 weeks of hell during the recovery, although Zorion is pretty young, so it might not be that bad. You will need to restrict his movements during that time though, even if he wants to run and play. His wound will need some time to heal. You should think about getting a harness for him... it will help him (and you) alot!

Keep us posted on his progress once you get him home... and post plenty of pictures so we can all see your adorable Zorion!

Wishing Zorion a speedy recovery!!! Sending you both a big fat hug!!! big-blink

Welcome Zorion and Mom!

Poor little guy!  That's a lot to go through in his short life!

I bet he's going to be a new doggie after this!    You are going to be so happy when he heals from the surgery.   A rear amp has it easier than a front amp so he should be just fine afterwards.

He's a doll - keep us updated!

Amy, we're so glad you came here to share Zorion's story. Wow. We're sorry that he's been through so much, I can't even imagine how that must have hurt. Our Tripawd pal Chuy Maloney had a FHO surgery after becoming a Tripawd, he knows alll  about that recovery.

But you know I'll bet that Zorion will get through this and feel sooooo good once he's all healed up. And yeah, since he was a Tripawd before the surgery he should be able to learn how to live on three legs real fast. You will be AMAZED!

Neat name, by the way! How did you pick it?

What a sad story...poor Zorion!  I have a friend who had FHO done on her Husky but thankfully he's doing great!

I'm betting, too, he'll bounce back quickly due to his young age.  At least his pain is now gone from that!

Welcome welcome!!  Zorion is adorable just adorable!! Like Jakesmom mentioned, a harness is one of the best things you can do for yourself and Zorion.  The Ruff Wear Harness can be found right here on this site and ask your vet how soon you can use it.  My vet let me use it at about 5 days as soon as it arrived, but Magic's incision was wrapped and some vets prefer to wait til the staples are out.  The other BIG HUGE thing is get some throw rugs with non-skid backs for any floors that are tile, wood, lino….anything slippery.

Keep us posted and come here often!

Thanks guys.

Just got home with him - I got to the vet clinic and went out the back to the cages, and he saw me and got up, wagging his tail big-grin Brought him out on a lead, I was expecting to have to carry him, but he didn't want to be carried, he wanted to walk. So he walked. And he jumped into the car (it's low though) and he curled up on 'his' seat. Got him home, he did a BIG pee before we went inside, he walked up the stairs as he normally did, no trouble at all. I stood right behind him the whole way, hands ready to catch him in case he stumbled or fell, but he did it fine. Went inside, and he went straight to bed and curled up on his blankets.

There is a lot of bruising along the lower side of the leg, I was told that was normal, and it's very swollen, again normal. He is on Rimadyl 50mg tablets at the moment, but only for the next couple of days.

Here is a photo before I took him home from the vet.

Zowie!

Yeay for another successful surgery, that's wonderful to hear Zorion is recuperating at home now. Yeah, the bruising is nasty but it's normal.

Hey mind if we borrow your close up pic for our "Treatment" photo gallery?

Good luck to you both, keep us posted OK?

Welcome to our group.  Hopefully once Zorion is past recovery he will be pain free.  Sounds like that was one painful injury.  Get your rest so you can keep up with him.  Trouble is faster on three legs than she was on four.  Thankfully, she's too old to want to move very fast 🙂

I'm glad to hear Zorion is doing well.  With all the pain he has been in I think amputation will be a breeze.  After he recovers from surgery his pain will be gone!  Poor baby.  I feel for him and for you.  I will put Zorion in my prayers.

Thanks guys,

He's already a lot happier now that most of the pain is gone. Before the amputation, when he lay down on his bed, he wasn't happy. There was this look on his face, because his sore leg was resting on the ground, it must have been hurting him. Now, he's already rolling onto his back, not rolling all the way over, but he's a lot happier now that he can move around without pain. My cat Wolf is being chased again, Zorion can manoeuvre the stairs fairly easily, more easily than he could with a dummy leg.

It's been 2 days since the amputation, and he's already a new dog.

Jerry - go for it. I was a bit concerned when I first saw all the bruising, but now that I know it's normal, it doesn't worry me all that much.

On another note, now that I've stopped stressing about Zorion, I've come down with the worst cold ever! If it's not the dog or horse it's me!

UPDATE

Went back to the vet this morning for a check up, 4 days on. Vet is very happy with how he's doing, and was surprised that he is so happy still. She was also amazed that when I brought him home on Friday afternoon, when I stopped at the bottom of the stairs to pick him up and carry him up, by the time I put my bag down to lift him, he was halfway up already..... SO! He is doing fantastically, loving life to the fullest, wants to go with me every time I get in the car to head to the stables or wherever, when I actually allowed him in the car this morning, he was ecstatic! The tail didn't stop wagging even when we walked into the vet, and he recognised where we were.

I said before that he is really happy that he can roll onto his back again, and now he sleeps on his back big-grin

I'm still hoping to be able to participate in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk next Sunday, even if we just mosey along and take our time. He should be fine, but like the vet said, see how he goes and just take it at a slow pace. Then we'll start our swimming again once the stitches are out!
