On June 27, 2003, at about 9 months of age, our rat terrier Yodi (12 pounds) was attacked by a loose pit bull that ran onto my parents' property just as my husband and I got out of the car. Yodi was on a leash, the pit bull was not. The pit bull grabbed Yodi in his mouth and was shaking him around; at one point it looked as if he had Yodi on the ground and was standing on him, trying to hold him still and bite him. My husband and I were frantic - screaming and yelling for help. Without thinking, I stood over top of the pit bull, grabbed him by the collar, and attempted to pull him away from Yodi. I think I ended up squeezing off the pit's air supply, because he made a choking/gagging sound and basically spit Yodi out. My husband grabbed Yodi and ran into my parents' house. We were afraid Yodi was going to be dead on the spot. That was the most terrifying, horrific thing I've ever experienced.

Yodi had to have surgery at an emergency vet to repair several tears and bite wounds on his chest. A few days after that surgery, we brought him to our vet in Sarasota, who kept him for a few weeks for observation, pain control, and a few procedures. Yodi was very weak and tired and when we went to visit him, he was often just laying down; he could hardly move around and sometimes could barely lift his head. Yodi's red blood cell count dropped severely so he received a blood transfusion from one of the technician's dogs, a Weimaraner. (He got big doggie blood, which helped him feel a lot better.) Yodi's left front leg was swollen due to trauma and the vets applied heat and massaged it in hopes of getting the swelling to go down. A large patch of skin/tissue was dying on his chest (where he had been bitten) and he had to have surgery to remove the decaying tissue. Days later, we learned that his left front leg still wasn't doing much better and we were referred to an animal hospital in Tampa. We took him up there for a consultation and learned that the tissue in the leg was dying, which was sending toxins into Yodi's body; the toxins were making him sick and weak and were entering his body too fast for his body to be able to fight them and heal himself. This left us with the decision to either amputate the leg and save Yodi's life, or let our little puppy go. The obvious decision to us was to amputate the leg. We didn't have second thoughts about it. The amputation was done on July 10th. We couldn't believe it when the vet called and told us that Yodi was sitting up in his cage and had even walked outside - all by himself - to go to the bathroom. We saw him two days after the surgery, and we were allowed to take him outside for a walk. We couldn't believe how well he was getting around. Especially because the last time we saw him before the surgery, he coud barely lift his head. We saw him a second time, about a week later, and he was actually gobbling up his treats, giving lots of kisses, and running and jumping on and off the sidewalk. His final procedure, a skin flap (skin graft) was done on July 21st to cover the large patch where the tissue on his chest had died and been removed. The day after that, July 22nd, he came home with us.

That was over 6 years ago. Yodi gets around great today... It amazes me at how well he manages. He is super fast, playful, and energetic. Missing a leg hasn't slowed him down one bit.

He's got a blog... http://lovemytr.....gspot.com/ Check it out! smiley10

So glad you survived Yodi! You rock!!

There was a dog on dog attack at a dog park near us a year or so ago and a little dog was killed. Another was missing for days because she was so scared after the attack that she hid. Worst part was there was already a court order that the dog who attacked was to be muzzled any time he was outside of his home and the owner selfishly disregarded it and the safety of those at the park (this dog had bitten people as well as dogs in the past).

Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.

He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

What a horrible story.  It breaks my heart that folks will allow their pit bull to roam without leash or supervision and things like this happen. They really are sweet dogs, but for their own protection and the protection of others, they MUST have constant supervision.

I'm so glad Yodi recovered and is well today.  What a brave boy he is.

Thanks for joining and sharing Yodi's story! We're so glad he survived and is doing so well six years later. Since you already have a blog, here are easy instructions for embedding photos in your forum posts.

Thank you also for linking to Tripawds  on Yodi's blog. Would you mind please fixing the link so it points to the main page of Jerry's blog, or the About page? You currently link to his Guestbook which lacks the details and helpful links these other pages do. Thanks!

I was so glad to read the attack happened six years ago.  I was till worrying about Yodi and skin grafts and what not. It kills me that pit bulls have such a bad rep because irresponsible people.  If you can't train your dog, don't get one.  Anyway, I'm glad all went well with your baby!

What an adorable little dog!!! So glad that Yodi survived his brutal attack... and is doing so well as a Tripawd!

It really pisses me off when I hear stories like that about irresponsable dog owners Mad. I hope that you were able to sue them and at least get your vet bills paid. I have a few stupid people like that in my neighborhood too... with big and small dogs. They'd come running up to us as we'd walk by, and try to attack our dogs (who'd always be on a leash). Of course, if my dogs ended up biting them, guess who'd be in trouble... So we'd rarely take our dogs outside because of it, maybe just very late in the evenings. It's a shame. We also have a leash law with a small fine... but the few times I've called our animal control, basically they'd tell me that unless there was an actual bite, they didn't have the time or resources to come check out and capture every loose dog they'd get a complaint about... Too bad, because if they would, maybe those irresponsible owners would get the message after having to pay a couple of fines!

Thank you for sharing Yodi's story with us!! He looks like one spoiled little guy!Big Blink

That is so horrible and scary!  I am glad to hear that Yodi is doing great years later!  What a cute dog!  I, too, have a little tripawd, and he gets around great on three legs.  Thanks for sharing your story.

Wow, I'm so glad you are OK now Yodi. I cannot guess how hard that whole ordeal was. I have Jacks and they have been attacked by other dogs (mostly labs) and now they can be very defensive around strange dogs because of it. When we walk now, it's pretty much early and late hours so we don't (HOPEFULLY) run into others but it sure wouldn't make a difference if a dog was loose like your situation. It's hard to keep the little ones safe sometimes. My jacks live with an old Pit Bull that I have owned since she was 7 weeks. By nature most Pits are not good with strange dogs so PEOPLE HAVE GOT TO BE RESPONSIBLE!!! I'm sorry this happened to you but I'm so glad to see you here now! smiley2

OMG - New Member Gina - that is the most adorable picture!

Poor Yodi!  And poor mom and dad!  I know from experience that couldn't be easy to write.  I hope you overcame the terror.  I still have chills down the spine when I hear dogs in the distance sounding like they might be fussing or fighting.  It's not easy to get over.

Unfortunately, my ordeals were from my own dogs who were friendly dogs.  Having a lame pack member (3-legged) didn't set well with  one of my dogs when Comet came into the house.  And another one would follow the lead of the aggressive toward Comet one.  They were big dogs, she wasn't.  For 2 years I dealt with it.  I've lost track of the stitches Comet and I have taken.  It came to a head that one day on the landing of the stairs, 9 years ago when they almost succeeded in killing her.

It was a hellish day.

I'm glad Yodi is doing great - thanks for joining us!

I am so sorry to hear that Yodi was attached. I can only imagine your fear at the time. I am happy to hear that he is doing well. Currently, we own two German Shepards, a pit bull/boxer mix and a one year old pit bull. I never take chances with my dogs even though they are all very sweet. I think people really need to be responsible with their dogs. It bums me out to hear stories of aggressive pit bulls. I am sorry this happened to you and your baby.

I work at a store that caters to people who love their dogs.  Everyone who comes in owning a pit bull says theirs is the sweetest thing you've ever met.  On the bus one day, a man had his 2 pit bulls with him and I sat by him in the back so I could accost the dogs.  Well, one was scared of the bus so she just layed there, but the other one was up on my lap, giving me kisses, and when I would stop petting him, he would look at me with these big eyes that make it so hard to say no 🙂  I'm very sorry that Yodi got attacked by a dog that wasn't raised right, but I am sooooooo glad that he came through it OK and that hes able to stick around for some more lovin' and to teach you some more life lessons (i think all our dogs teach us something!).  Sucks that the negligence of an owner gave Yodi pain and you the biggest scare of your life.  Can't wait to hear more about you, Yodi!
