prices vary so much geographically, it's hard to generalize.  in reading your story, i didn't think the bill was outrageous at all.  not that $1700 is a small amount of money, but for all the care, it didn't seem over the top.  even here in ET, where prices are more reasonable (perhaps), that would seem acceptable.  but then, i know my breast cancer surgery and radiation was way over 100K...vet services are very reasonable compared to people doctors...thank goodness for insurance!

hopefully you can get detail to help explain the charges and perhaps a payment plan too.  remember, you still have your pup, which is priceless.

Thank You everyone for your input and opinions on my dilemma. All of the comments gave me alot to think about. I do want to stress that I wasn't looking for a fault on the vets part to try to reduce my bill. I felt something was wrong with Valentina the day that I brought her home from the surgery. She had massive drainage as soon as I got her home from the vet and after a couple of days I suspected that the vet may have done something not quite right. As a reminder for anyone that doesn't remember, my vet sent me home with my dog and did not tell me that any kind of problem was going on. He did tell me that he inserted a drainage tube for some fluid to be able to come out but in no way did he prepare me for what actually happened. Also on the day that she was released it was a Saturday and he told me to leave the bandage on until Tuesday!!!!!! The bandage was thoroughly saturated by the next morning so I called and the vet said that he would come on Monday instead of Tuesday to change the bandage. I believe that not having the bandages changed often enough was the cause of her infection but that was the instructions that my vet gave me so I did what he said. I wish now that I had learned to change the bandage from the very beginning so I could have changed it every day intsead of waiting for the vet to come to my house and do it. Anyway today I have calmed down a bit about this and after reading all of the comments I am feeling better. I will wait to see what the vet tells me on Tuesday. I don't want to have any hard feelings between my vet and I and I know that it is ultimately my responsibility to pay that bill. I do think that the vet is going to reduce it some but he said that he couldn't reduce it too much more. But I will probably just go with whatever he says he can reduce it to. But I still do want to see what they did do while she was there. Upon studying my bill many many times I did notice that only 1 of the irrigations is on my bill. And I know that she had at least 6 or 7 irrigations done. So realizing that did make me see that they did deduct something. Also there are probably many other things that they had to do that I don't realize. Really the most important thing is that she did finally recover and she is doing wonderful now. She is so strong now that one day she nearly broke my toe while I was outside with her and she saw another dog. I tried to hold her back and she pulled me across the grass. She weighs 40lbs more than I do. My shoes were just sliding and I was holding on as tight as I could and as I was trying to grip the ground somehow my toe got twisted. It is all black and blue now. I have been taking her out in the fenced in area more now because of that. But it is alot farther for her to walk to get there and she does get tired easily especially if it's hot. She is normally very good on the leash and listens well but since she has been feeling better from her surgery she has gotten just plain wild sometimes!!

In Mid June, our cat Caesar was driving me nuts one morning about 4:30 so I got out of bed and let him out the back door - within 20 minutes we heard a horrible blood curdling scream out of him and the coyotes started yapping...I was able to fly down the stairs and outside and actually stopped the coyotes from doing any real damage to him (they were youngsters) and they dropped him and ran and then one came back and tried to grab him again but Caesar was able to get free....after 20 minutes or so, I was finally able to talk him into letting me pick him up and I was able to bring him into the house....He went into shock (who wouldn't) and I sat with him till the vet opened and I called and said I was on my way......Since I didn't have an actual appt. and I said it was an emergency - the office visit went from $ 65.00 to $ 400.00 - they gave him a couple of shots at the vet and sent me home with antibiotics and pain meds - which because it was an emergency cost me another $ 200.00 - While he as at the vet - they looked for puncture wounds, shaved his neck because he had swollen up like a soft ball and did not find anything....the next morning however he had 3 holes that were draining - so he was pretty one sore kitty for about 10 days.....any ways the reason I told my story is cuz I used the word emergency when I called and my bill otherwise would have probably been more like $ 125.00.....

I know there is a fine line in this situation. I, too, believe Valentina was sent home with a post surgical issue that was unacceptable. That said, if you intend to continue to use this clinic, then you are going to have to come to an acceptable agreement for both of you.

I am happy to hear they are still willing to do further review and that you have found that there were items that were not billed.

Oh! That is a terrifying story about your cat and the coyotes! I am sure that emergencies are much more expensive than regular visits. It must be hard to fit in all of the emergencies and your regular appts. as well so I guess they charge you extra for that reason and lots of times the emergencies cause the vets to have to stay late. At my vet they are dealing with emergencies everytime I call or go there. Vets are super busy people!! It will be hard to decide whether to stay with my current vet or not. I have been through alot over the past 13 years with them and I even took my animals there when I was a kid. I can't imagine when it is Valentina's time to go having to go through that with a new vet's office. I have developed a relationship with the doctors and the other people at this vet over the years and it would be very odd to go through such a personal thing with people that I barely know. I don't think there is enough time to get to know a whole new staff before it's her time. I'll just have to wait and see and see if I can get an answer through prayer.

Well the vet bill dilemma is over. My vet got back to me and he decided to take an extra 20% off of  the services on my bill so I just went with it and I went in and paid it and now I am just hoping that nothing goes wrong for a while. The vet did go over all of the things that were done while Valentina was there and like I had expected there were things that I had not even thought of. Just plain and simple , Veterinary services are very very expensive!! And when you have such a large Dog they can be ginormous! I don't think most people think much about medical expenses when they first get a Dog. All you can think of is this cute adorable bouncing around puppy and the last thing on your mind is when they get older and they get sick. It wouldn't have changed my mind about getting a Great Dane because having Valentina has been one of the best experiences of my life. However I think that people should think more about their Dog's future when they decide to get a new puppy and consider what costs the future may bring so they are more prepared for it. Most of the time we are just thinking of the food costs and the once a year shots and a few other things like toys and such. It doesn't sound like much but it sure does add up. Unfortunately all of the animals I have had have had lots of medical problems even from puppyhood. With that said I have still loved all of my animals very much and they are very much worth it. The bills however can still be shocking. From now on I will pay careful attention to what the costs may end up being and make sure to get an estimate before any procedures are done. There was so much craziness surrounding Valentina's emergency I wasn't paying enough attention to those details. I am so thankful that she did get well and I know that the vet did alot to help her get better and I didn't realize just how much goes into veterinary services. Especially complications and emergencies. So I paid my bill and I feel perfectly ok about it now. Valentina did have a strange thing happen recently though. Where her incision is right where there was a drainage hole started to open up a little last week. Only about a 1/4 of an inch opened and I could see pink flesh showing and it had a clear sticky fluid. I seemed to close up after a day or 2 and then open again. Then it seemed to close again and now seems fine. I don't know if it got bumped or something but her 3 month ampuversray is on Sept 27th and I don't know if that is a normal occurance. I did ask the vet about it and he said maybe she bumped it and to clean it . It seems fine now. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it.
