It is day 2 after the surgery and I am amazed at how munchkin is doing. Doc gave Munchkin previcox for the pain so I guess it is working well. We made the canvas tote thing and I built him a ramp. But he has not used either. He has been going potty both ways! I was so surprised he figured it out so quickly. I am tryi g to keep his activity level down but every time I take him out he is grabbing sticks and running around with them! Munchkin won't use the ramp. Instead he is jumping the two steps. I am glad he is doing well, but at the same time it has me worried. I know that is very silly, but is this normal for a 6 month old puppy with a front leg amp?

As you'll notice over the coming weeks, for most dogs, recovery is a wild roller coaster ride of ups and downs. To avoid those downs, try not to let Munchkin over do it! He's hopped up on the meds now and thinks he can do anything. Confinement and rest are key to safe recovery. Thanks for the update, please keep us posted.

I nave him baby gated in my bedroom. We call it puppy jail. We are taking him out every couple of hours. And he is only outside a few minutes. Doc said to keep him confined this weekend. Then we are bringing him back to vet on Monday to. Check the incision. We have not seen it yet as the vet has it bandaged. Doc left a couple of small spaces open so the fluids will drain.

Happy to hear he is doing so well. You both need to rest up. Keep us posted after you go to the vet on Monday.
Sending you golden hugs!

Day 3 and I am trying to keep munchkin from doing too much. He so wants to go outside and run! Munchkin is trying to catch every bug he sees. If his sister is outside munchkin wants to run and play with her. I know we have to keep him quite, but it sure is difficult. I have no idea how to keep him quiet while he is outside.

A portable exercise pen is best for confining dogs outside, or around the house. Interactive treats and toys can also help keep recoverng pups occupied.

Thanks for the update! Sounds like li'l Munchkin is doing great!

Dante still prefers to jump steps. We have a deck with about 4 steps going up (it's a good 3 feet off the ground) and he chooses to jump onto the deck, but will usually (thankfully!) take the stairs down or run to the other end of the deck that is just a bit off the ground and go down. We built the stairs wider for him last summer, but he still face plants on them on his way up.

One thing I have learned that it is INCREDIBLY hard to keep a puppy from the 'explosive' exercise they are supposed to avoid. Like, really nearly impossible. I think more so for us because we also have Dante's sibling Mina (crazy puppy herself) and another dog who likes to play. It might be easier if he were our only dog. Our of the three he is the  most hyper and crazy too. I pretty much spend my time chasing the dogs down, hollering at them to stop throwing themselves in their air at each other and slamming into things at full speed ahead. Dante also, unfortunately, isn't very smart. My girls will stop on a dime and listen REALLY well when given commands. Dante is a verrry slow learner and we're still working on things like 'stop' and 'enough' with him. A year ago I was worried he would never adapt. Now I'm pretty sure he would've been an uncontrollable terror if he had all 4 legs. My only saving grace is that he gets tired fairly quickly!

Munchkin finds his own companion, say bugs and moths. Then runs after them. It's so amazing that he does not even realize that he is missing a leg. He is leashed as we have not gotten the whole stay, this is your yard thing. And he still runs, pulls, etc just to catch those pesky flying bugs.
I built Munchkin a ramp, he insists on jumping up and down our steps(luckily only 3), I keep trying to get him to use the ramp, yah right.
