Hi My name is lorie,

My dog Rusty became a tripawd almost 4 months ago, it was very scary and a hard decision to amputate his rear leg do to cancer in the bone. We made that decision and i am glad we did he is pain free now. He recovered very quickly and runs so fast on 3 legs. He loves attention and playing with his sisters.

So getting pass that 8 days ago he had problems eating and drinking water do to his lower jaw being paralyzed. He tried eating and his food would fall out of his mouth, drooling and slobbering real bad, he was struggling to keep food in his mouth. So our vet was closed so we rushed him to the ER thinking broken or dislocated jaw or even maybe something lodged in his throat. We get there they done a complete examination and said he did not have a broken jaw or anything lodged in his throat. Instead they said possible nerve damage from trauma to the face which we knew he wasn't hit in the jaw. They recommend taking him home and make sure he gets his food and plenty of water and to see our vet the next morning.

We decided to wait and see a specialist about it so I called the office to set up an appointment instead the specialist was there on a off day doing paperwork so he wanted to get more info about Rusty, I told him about the problems Rusty was having and said he was almost positive it was Trigeminal neuritis. This is a rare condition that effects the dogs lower jaw, lips and eyes that lasts from 2-4 weeks usually corrects itself and very rare if they don't recover.

I have done so much research but not alot out there. I did find out from a hunters blog about his dog doing this too so he put a rubber band around his muzzle to give it support to close his mouth so he can eat. He took 45 minutes to eat without the band and 15 minutes with the band on. It made a unbelievable difference. I have been giving him water by using a syringe in the corner of his mouth to keep him from getting dehydrated.

So today I wanted to make sure he wasn't dehydrated and just to get a check up. So the vet put him on prednisone for inflammation and a eye lubricant to keep his eyes moist. So now it is a waiting game to see if it corrects itself. This condition is rare but you can do things to help them through this. If it doesn't correct itself we will be there for him always. He is aggravated with it but not in pain at all, we saw a liitle bit of movement in the jaw tonight,so that is a encouraging sign.

So if anyone have this happen to their dog,I want you to know there is help out there. You need to research how to help them.

Lorie I'm so glad you posted here to share Rusty's story. First, let me say that it's wonderful he's been doing so well after amputation surgery. Remind me, what type of cancer did the vets diagnose him with?

I had never heard of trigeminal neuritis until last night when you told me about it in the chat. I googled it and found a couple of pieces of information here and here but so far nothing that really showed how to help him eat or drink. Thanks for offering those tips. It does sound very scary but you are handling this like a champ. Bless you for being so good to him and being there for all his needs during such a tough time. I have my paws crossed that the next couple of weeks will fly by very quickly, I'm sure you must be overwhelmed with this level of care.

Hugs, hugs and more hugs to you and Rusty. You are our heroes! Please keep us posted.
