Howdy, Shelby and I just got home from out first social/therapy visit to Memorial Hospital.

We met our mentor in the entry to the hospital and started our rounds. They first area we went to was admissions to say hi to those who work at the hospital and a few folks waiting to be checked in. After that we focused on the waiting rooms for the critical and intensive care area of the hospital.

We saw a ton of families on the 2nd floor where the intensive care area is. We made our way down the hallway stopping and speaking to whomever wanted to have a moment with a dog. We could tell some folks had a lot on their minds and simply asked if they would like to meet Shelby. Almost everyone said yes, so we would talk with them for a moment and most would pet Shelby or stoke her head or ears and then they would let us know they were through.

A SRPD officer was critically wounded this week. We tried to get onto the floor to offer whatever comfort we could, but we couldn't get that clearance so we moved on to the critical waiting room. It's hard to see family members and friends in these waiting area, there is so much concern and deep emotional stress these people are going through. We quietly went in, several folks were very polite and said no thanks, but we were able to offer some comfort to a few people.

It was nice that Shelby could bring a little bit of a break and some smiles to folks going through a tough time.

There was a lot of walking so we'll bring her wagon next time. I was so proud of her this morning, she hung in there and did what she does so very we'll, make people smile.

It is so exciting that you and Shelby are doing this.  I must admit, however, your topic header filled me with dread!  We wanted to get Emily to be a therapy dog but she has developed hip dysplasia in her only remaining hip so she wouldn't be able to physically do it and we need to concentrate on her now.  I think it is wonderful that you are giving people in the hospital such joy.  A woman I work with lost her husband to cancer recently and told me that if the last few weeks before his death the only thing that made him smile was a therapy dog.  God bless you.

My stomach also dropped when I saw your post!  How wonderful that you gave your Saturday to bring comfort to those who definitely needed it!  I'm sure you and Shelby made more of a difference than you think.  Even those who respectfully declined were probably touched by your thoughtfulness!  You guys ROCK!!!

I guess that I will eventually forgive you for SCARING us so much.  Having said that, it was a wonderful story of just how great a companion can be.  I am sure that Shelby's personality just pours out in such conditions.  It is great that Shelby can help provide some comfort to those in the hospital.  Studies have definately shown that whenever patients get such therapy dogs they feel and do significantly better.  Some say it is because they can focus on something other than their own problems, aches, and pains.  I am sure that seeing how brave Shelby is facing cancer has to be inspirational to any and everyone.

TriPawds really are awesome and Shelby is part of the proof.

I am so very sorry for the title I gave to this thread. I'm sure it made since when I wrote it earlier today.

I contacted the admin and asked them to please change the title to "Shelby's dad's a dork for upsetting folks."

Again, sorry for causing any concern or worry. I'll make sure Cindi proofs all my posts from now on.

Now, I'm going to the kitchen and have a piece of apple pie with vanilla ice cream. jackEmbarassed

Having spent time with Shelby, (Also, working in a hospital where I have seen lots of dogs hard at work) I can say she would make an awesome therapy dog! Shelby has the best personality for that job! She really does make one glow just to look at her beautiful face with that big happy smile. She's very gentle. Another thing is she is a tactile pleasure...her fur seems unrealistically soft and luxurious! She could help people on many levels. Good job, Shelby!

May 2001-Jan 21, 2010.....I'm a dog and I'm AWESOME!..... Always.

I agree!  Shelby is one of those dogs who just seem to overflow with love.  I imagine that anyone who spent time with her would end up feeling better.  And Jack, since I knew you were doing this, I didn't have the fear reaction to the title.  I opened it looking forward to Shelby's new venture.

That is an awesome thing that you are doing with Shelby! First of all, most people usually melt whenever they see an animal (well, at least I do!) and then to see that they have also undergone a trajedy and are still happy and full of life... It can definitely encourage the sick and injured people you visit. A smile can be great medicine!Smile

I work at a cancer center, and was thinking about maybe bringing Jake for of their pet therapy days (they have them twice a week). Jake is a big, super-affectionate, sweetie and I know that he'd love the attention... and all the folks would definitely love him! I'll have to get more details from our volunteer dept first... I seem to recall that all those dogs had to take a course first, then become certified, or something. Way Cool

Keep up the wonderful work you are doing with Shelby...
