Day 6 and Rosie is doing great.  She doesn't even bother with the incision because she is resting so well with the meds.  Of course, I never leave her alone without her cone on.  I had to build myself another dog pen in my bedroom so Rose could sleep in my room where she is used to sleeping.  Unfortunately, my bed is way to high for her to sleep with me any more.  She is taking things in stride and went right to sleep on the side of my bed in her new safe space.  I had my hubby cut down all of our ottomans in the den and TV room to 10 inches high so when Rosie is all healed up, she will still be able to easily get up on the sofas with us  That is the one thing she really wants to do now. We sit on the floor with her so she doesn't try to jump on anything.  Thank goodness we are retired because one of us is always either sitting with her by our side on the floor or she goes back in the indoor pen. Hopping around during her potty breaks is all the exercise I am letting her do.  The vet said it is important that she is kept quiet and not allowed too much hopping around during her recuperation period.  Once Rose gets the stitches out I plan on starting her in a rehab program so she can build up core strength and stamina before I let her off leash.  Even now, she thinks she tries to take off so I have to keep the leash short.  I'm afraid keeping her from running at top speed is going to be my biggest challenge.

I would love to hear stories about those of you who took your dogs to rehab after amputation surgery.  Was it beneficial?  How long did they go?

Did they have laser, or acupuncture?  I still feel awful about her losing her leg and I want to do everything I can to keep her strong and healthy.

Loooove this! You had me laughing  in an audible chuckle🤣

We had another member here years ago who cut the legs off their loveseat so their BullDog could get on the sofa with them. You are the second member I've heard do this! True love!!💖

Others will chime in on their Rehab experiences.  I never did do it with my Happy Hannah (125 lb.  rear legger Bull Mastiff).  I did have some at-home-visits for my adopted tripawd Frankie when he had cruciate  surgery on one of his remaining  rear legs.  Never did acupuncture.   The therapy did include some laser on the incision area  where her cruciate surgery was.

What I found most beneficial was watching  his gait and learning the best form versus poor form for proper balance, strength, joint health etc.  There were so many simple things I was taught I could do after each visit.  For example, just  having Frankie repeat sitting, then standing several times helped strengthen his core.

Remeber, the Tripawds Foundation   will pay for the first rehab visit ..

Stay tuned for other fe3dback.  So thrilled to know how well sweet Rosie is doing.......and it gets better and better!!😎

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Wow, at Day Six she is doing SO well! I love how mindful you are about her activity too. Great job!

Here are some fantastic rehab stories from members who have taken advantage of our Tripawds Rehab Reimbursement Grant.

Also see member blogs that mention rehab. Go to the bottom of the list and click "Next" to see more. There's a lot!

This update about our own Wyatt's rehab can also give you some insight on what it was like to take our senior dog:

I'm so excited you want to take Rosie to see a therapist. It makes a huge difference in recovery, and is especially beneficial to educate pet parents about their own dog's unique physical strengths and weaknesses. We can't say enough good things about rehab!

P.S. I saw you were in the Tripawds Chat earlier and asked for help posting in your new blog. Message me and we can set up a time to meet in the chat or on the phone OK?
