Hey Patrick,

Things are definitely getting better, that's great! I am sorry about the path results. Are you in Colorado or did you just have the labs sent there? Yeah, osteo sucks. BUT, yes, MANY dogs outlive those depressing odds and go way beyond what the experts predict. In fact, Tripawds was founded because of one Great Dane named Moose who beat the osteo odds (2+ years) which encouraged us to proceed with amputation for our Jerry. Always remember that nobody knows how long our pets have, with or without cancer.

I'm so glad to read that you're aware of the importance of choosing an AAHA-accredited clinic. YAY! Since you mention that, I have no doubts the vets are following current pain management guidelines (they have to, otherwise they wouldn't be accredited). Of course every dog is different so yeah, Onyx's meds sound like they could use some adjustment.

While we can't give you a specific dosage for Gabapentin what we can do is point you to this article so you can discuss it with your vet.

Glad to hear things are improving!

Maggie was on Tramadol for two weeks following her amputation although we were tapering down the last couple of days.  We didn't get gaba back then.

My understanding of how gaba works best is that it needs to be associated with another pain med or a NSAID.  When I used if for quad pug Tani's arthritis she was also taking rimadyl.

I'm sorry you got the OSA diagnosis- even when you are expecting it there is always that little glimmer of hope that it is something else. You have a great attitude though!  I tried to always move forward with optimism- there are those that survive way past the stats...why can't that be Onyx?!?!?!?

Jerry, thanks for the information about Gabapentin.  Yes, I'm in Colorado, in the Denver area.  The information does seem to indicate that using another pain med with it makes it perform better.  Would the Carprofen not qualify?  Onyx got his stitches out on Monday and the doc and I discussed pain meds and he seemed to feel that Gaba + Carprofen was the right call.

Onyx does not seem in pain that I can tell, but he does seem fidgety at times - particularly when sitting next to me on the couch and it's driving me nuts.  I'm trying to get things back to "normal" to make him feel better and he usually sits next to me on the sofa.  Because it didn't seem like a thick blanket was comfortable enough for him post-surgery, I placed a slightly smaller version of his dog bed on the sofa, also supported by an ottoman.  This is a really nice bed, made from think orthopedic memory foam and the same exact bed that he sleeps on (and loves), but one size smaller - however still big enough for him.

However, he keeps getting up turning around a few times, then plopping back down in the exact same spot.  I can't figure out what he's trying to accomplish.  He is current on all pain meds, has been fed, etc.  It just seems like he is restless and I'm not sure why.  Have your dogs behaved this way about two weeks post-surgery?

Is it possible that he was used to laying on his amp side when he was on the couch?  Like people, dogs usually prefer one sleeping position, or side,  over the other. If the amp is on the side he used to sleep on, it sill may  be sore and he just can't get used to sleeping on the other side yet.  Just throwing that out there.   My Happy Hannah took five. weeks before she was comfortable sleeping on her amp side.

Msybe try him on the sofa without the new bed on it if that's hoa he slept by you before.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Carprofen is rimadyl which is what my quad-pug Tani took with Gaba and it worked well for her.

I can't help with the restlessness, Maggie was a slug after her surgery, except that some dogs do get restless on pain meds... just to complicate things!
