Our dog lived almost two years with an excellent quality of life after amputation and chemotherapy for osteosarcoma, despite his large size and pre-existing arthritis. The first few weeks after the amputation were difficult for him and for us, but he recovered completely and was as happy and active as a puppy up until early this morning when he collapsed due to a large, bleeding abdominal tumor that was most likely a completely different kind of cancer. He was stabilized and we got a few minutes with him comfortable and wagging his tail before putting him to sleep.

There has never been any doubt in my mind that we made the right decision by treating the osteosarcoma, and I would say the same if he hadn't lived half so long. Time is most precious when one
is acutely aware of its transience, and not a day went by that we
weren't grateful for the extra time with him.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Having almost 2 years is wonderful. Although Skyler on lived 3 months longer, we have no regrets either. We made every moment count.

Sending you cyber hugs! Now your boy is running free at Rainbow Bridge!

Sorry to hear of your loss. I know the feeling of not regretting anything, and its a comforting one. Even though we only had Gus about 3 1/2 months post surgery it was worth every penny and I wouldn't have changed a thing, and the blessing here is it sounds like you weren't having to think about what to due very long, thats great, I often think the pressure of making that decision is one of the worse feelings we go through,  the memories can ease pain, but they don't take it away, hopefully time will help you with that, Paws up, Spirit Gus and Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

We send our hugs out your way, and are deeply sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for taking the time to share his story. Doing so will most definitely help others as they wrestle with the very tough amputation decision.

Thank you for those wonderful insights at this at this difficult time.  It is reassuring for many of us newbies.  And thank you Skyler and Gus, two very brave spirits with strong families...

I am so sorry for the passing of your beloved family member. Our pups are such special members of the family. Your story is so affirming of the fact that your decision to fight the cancer was never regretted. We do the best we can for them, and treasure the time together.

They will be missed, but never, ever forgotten.
